Like Father Like Son
“Yes honey?” Rory was sitting in his squad car with his partner when Jo called him. “Yeah… Steak. Just make sure you cut it up for Spence. He won’t be able to eat it otherwise. I don’t want him to choke… Medium rare, I think. Okay- Yeah I love you too… Yes I mean it really. I always mean it really. And you are beautiful, don’t forget that. Okay. I have to go. I love you. I'll see you tonight, boo. Okay, bye.” He put his phone in his pocket and returned his attention to the police radio. He had had this job for about three years. He was glad for it, too. He’d been surprised when they’d let him onto the force with his criminal record. It had meant a lot to him though, now he was just like his dad.
“Wife?” asked his partner in the drivers seat. Rory just nodded slowly. He wasn’t a big talker at work. He felt intimidated; like he’d lose everything he’d worked for if he spoke too much.
A report suddenly blasted from the police scanner. Rory wasn’t paying much attention to the address or anything, he was zoning out a bit, thinking about home. The car started moving. A breaking and entering in Brooklyn. It was simple, in and out, a quick arrest.
Once they reached the building they hopped out of the car, directly intercepting the criminal. “Stop!” Rory shouted. The other man pulled out a gun so Rory’s partner did the same while Rory struggled with his own. “I need you to cooperate with me and officer Watson here” said the other man. The crook made a start to run but the other stopped him. “I will shoot if you make a move” he said and started to move towards the man. Suddenly, bang. Rory didn’t know who’s gun it came from. He just heard it go off. He looked to his partner, frightened, wiping what he assumed was sweat from his shirt. Red came off on his hand.
Now came the realization. His hands slowly moved to his stomach, covering an open wound. Blood seeped between his pale fingers. He gasped a little and fell back, his head cracking on the concrete. It was fitting he’d go this way, working for the police, caught in crossfire, just like the father he’d looked up to for so long.
