At school, it was a sport we all actively took part in. Most of it was because there wasn’t proper cricketing gear at school. Also, volleyball involved every one of us. Unlike cricket, none of us was disappointed about not being able to bat. Ah! Those days! Being avid lovers and players of brilliant sports like this, we have watched it grow rampantly over the years. There are today, federations, associations, and professional training centers for volleyball. While a tad bit arrogant, we are in a way deeply humbled to be one of the earliest players of volleyball. Well, perhaps not the earliest but at least for being those that were involved in the game before any major global professionalism in the sport. At school back in the day, the rules were oblique. Teams consisted of various numbers anywhere ranging from 5-10 on each side. An equal number of players per team was ensured every time. The score of volleyball was also dependent on the number of players. Lower the players meant that the scoring too was meager. For example, for a team of 5 each, we played games in the best of three(s) with each game amounting to an odd number such as 11, 15, 17, and so on. This was the story for most informal games of volleyball in backyards, beaches, and school playgrounds. Volleyball soon became much appreciated by the global giants including the Olympics. The game took the stage at the Olympics in 1964. The game since then generally contains 3 sets per game. An average game contains 12 players, with six players each per team. The first team to win best 2 out of 3 sets wins the match. Interestingly, sets one and two are played to 25 points with a rally scoring system and a team must win by two points. For example, if there is a tie of 24-24, the game will continue till one team has a two-point lead, say till 27. Set three will however be played to 15 points, again, with a team winning by two. These are usually the most commonly used systems for global play. There can be however games played to 21 points in three/five/seven games.
