The fresh autumn weather was kind to the two of you today. It seems recently there was only harsh cold or sweltering heat, but today was mild. The sun had already begun to set, the gentle chill in the air beginning to nip at your cheeks and tips of your ears as the two of you trotted through the forestry.
You rode on the back of Wyrdeer, your company on your beloved Rapidash who was lovingly named Winnie.
Volo sat in silence as he listened to you hum tunes he’d never heard before, unable to help himself from stealing glances of you. The silence between you isnt tense, much to Volo’s confusion.
You were so kind. It wasnt that you were harmless, that was far from the case and he knew it. You just were so kind as to bring him with you on these little trips you made. No one these days is truly a friend of his after his attempts to have Giratina create a “new world”, but you? Well… you’re the closest to a friend he has left. And even then he knew you still had your caution about him, and he had no intent of giving you anymore reason to suspect him. He knew what you were capable of and he’d seen it up close in its rawest, cruelest form.
You should have killed him. Anyone else would have, and Volo knew he would have deserved it after betraying you the way he did. He intended for you to die, he wanted you to die, and it was his plan from the beginning to have you killed by Giratina when it came time for him to be summoned- or even to kill you himself as a sacrifice, if it meant it would appease his lord. The plan was always to have you retrieve the plates and to then rip them from your cold, dead hands, wether you were killed by Giratina or Volo himself, it didn’t matter. You were supposed to die, and that was supposed to be it.
But there you are, living, breathing, singing songs he doesnt recognize happily- with the man who tried to kill you riding on the back of one of your beloved companions, trusting him enough to keep your back turned to him.
Volo watched in awe of all that you are. He felt his face drop, his heart heavy as he felt the guilt deep in his gut swirl sickeningly as his thoughts spiraled. He had already given you his apologies for it all, not that you can apologize and undo the damage of an attempted murder. You were honest, stern as you told him you weren't sure you could forgive such a betrayal. Your words weren’t kind as you ripped into him, telling him what an ugly display of his heart he gave you the “pleasure” of looking at back then. You later echoed the thoughts he had himself, having gripped him by the throat as you hissed to him through gritted teeth “I should have killed you.”
Volo’s fingers gently grazed his neck as he thought of when your hand closed so tightly on it. He wasn’t used to letting others get even close to laying their hands on him, but for whatever reason he refused to fight back against you in that moment.
Well, he had an idea as to why. The guilt in his gut swirled and twisted harshly as his mind wondered on it. You always fascinated him as you carried yourself in this unfamiliar land with such strength. He truly was drunk on pride to believe he ever could ever subdue you, even with Giratina at his side. But with the fresh ego death... well, he doesn’t exactly feel as he once did. In place of his once burning devotion to Giratina now sat a more searing, burning emotion he could never entirely understand- perhaps due to his willful ignorance to it. Remembering how you slammed him into the wall as you verbally tore into him a if he was nothing, it made something within him flutter… and that made the feeling of guilt swirl and twist tighter.
Volo shook his head, as if he could shake his clear attraction away with just that. If anyone cared to pay him any mind these days, they could tell from just looking at him he’s fallen for the very person he was ready to kill. But he wasn’t exactly ready to come to terms with that yet.
He leaned forward slightly, giving Winnie a pet on the neck as his eyes trained on you.
“Wyrdeer found [Y/N] worthy of riding upon its back, but no one else really has gotten that chance...” Volo thought aloud to Winnie, quiet enough that you couldn’t hear.
“… I’m not very worthy of being on your back, am I?” Volo turned his gaze to the Rapidash, giving a sheepish smile. Winnie turned her head to look at the man on her back, glaring daggers back at him. Volo chuckled nervously as Winnie turned her gaze back forward.
“I guess I’ve earned that look.” He mumbles, his feeling of guilt only worsened.
“I do want you to know that im sorry.” He says quietly before pausing to rethink what he means. “I mean, I know sorry most certainly isn’t enough, but it… it feels better to apologize. Even if you disregard it, that’s okay. I just… want you to know I regret what I did to your [Y/N].”
Winnie lets out a huff, clearly disregarding what the man on her back had to say. Volo couldn’t help but smile slightly.
“You really love [Y/N], don’t you? You’re such a good girl.” He says, gently scratching behind her ear. She leans into it happily, making Volo chuckle. His gaze turns back to you, watching as you grab a low hanging berry from a tree you passed under. He watched as you inspected it for second, passing it to Wyrdeer when you deemed it safe to eat. The majestic beast ate the berry happily from your hand, a smile growing on your face as you gave Wyrdeer a good scratch under the chin.
Volo’s heart grew watching you be so loving. He was determined to one day be on the receiving end of your love. Devotion to a god filled him with a sense of purpose, but love for you filled him with so much more. You were tangible, you were …here. Despite biting the hand that fed him, you reached your hand out again- still bleeding, still shaking, determined to show kindness to someone who most knew to not deserve it. You didn’t listen when the leaders of this unfamiliar world told you it was cruel to keep him alive, you didn’t listen to them when they begged you to keep your distance. They echoed the same thought everyone had. “You should have killed him.”
But you didn’t.
You were determined to be kind, despite it all.
You were a second chance he knew he didn’t deserve.
He wasn’t about to lose his last chance. He knew he had a lot to prove. Not just that he was worthy of all that you gave him, but that he was worthy to be loved and live along side you and the creatures that guarded you with their life.
