The not-so-great parts of being part of a volunteer group

Depends entirely on the group - who is in the group, what the group is supposed to do, how much time the group gives volunteering, how the group is supported, supervised, evaluated and recognized, and on and on. Impossible to answer this question in general. I have had wonderful experiences as a part of a group of volunteers. I have dreadful, horrible experiences as well. There are occasional downsides to volunteering, too, and it's only fair to mention them.

Not everyone you meet will be wonderful to work with. It's true anywhere, and it's true in volunteering. Sometimes personalities clash. Sometimes someone's enthusiasm and skills don't line up.

There may be more work to do than your group can handle. It's possible to burn out on volunteer work, or simply not to feel very satisfied when you can only meet a tiny part of the need.

There can politics involved in volunteering organizations, just as with any other. Group leaders may make bad decisions, or assign the wrong tasks to the wrong people.

If you do find yourself in a situation such as these, it should be relatively easy to make a change, or ask for one.  If you can neither tolerate nor correct a difficulty, you can always leave, or try another activity or organization. But my personal experience I can say that volunteering in India is my best experience in my life where I got extraordinary staff supports and learn the new culture and specially spicy food.

This is a blog that I have done for a Brazilian volunteer group that I am part in here. I am helping the group in the administration, marketing, craft, social media and into the Drama group.

This project was a big surprise and have been grand for me because we, Brazilians, feel a lot the lack of closed relationship that we usually have in our country. The contact with the people is very important in our culture and for us, foreigners, the volunteer job is a way to supply it and also to be involved with Dublin culture on the places that we have supported.
