Today we celebrate National Astronaut Day and what better way to celebrate than with a space fair?!  Starting in 1960, U.S. Navy Commands in Ventura County have conducted a yearly space fair and air show. The purpose of the space fair was to collect money for the Navy Relief Society and other service-oriented charities. It also was an opportunity for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps to show off some of their defense capabilities. 

In 1968, over 200,000 people attended the three-day event and over 100,000 viewed the air show from outside the fence. The space fair had many space and aerospace companies with exhibitor booths showing off their latest technologies, as well as carnival rides and plenty of food. 

What we have pictured here are two pictures of some future astronauts. We also have pictured Archives Technician Aaron who located an actual Von’s grocery store paper bag just like the one the little girl is wearing.
