Letter from von Steuben to the Board of War and Ordinance asking compensation be made to the officers who helped him compose Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States - the drill manual he created to whip the troops into shape.
He asked for $500 and a commission to Captain for L’Enfant, driving home that their work wasn’t cheap: “The Officers who assisted me in composing the Regulations for the Troops having been detained for that purpose near Six Months in this Expensive City.”
I can’t imagine what he thought expensive considering he traveled with staff, trunks, and a pet greyhound.
