ead felt nothing as she watched selda's composure begin to crack. how dare she cry for someone that was not hers to mourn? lena was the light and a force of nature. the emptiness that was left behind in ead's chest was gaping and agonising, but even she did not weep.
within seconds, she was off her perch and her fingers gripping tightly into selda's jaw.
"don't you dare cry for her and don't you dare cry for me." the words were hissed between a tightened jaw and clenched teeth. there was no love or affection in her gaze for her best friend.
"there is a reason i did not share the information with emre." she continued. "he is jahaar's lapdog and perhaps you are too. i have been ignorant towards the politics here with my distraction. i should have been more careful."
it was wrong to describe lena as a distraction. but she was the most perfect distraction. ead, if she survived her last task, would beg the gods to allow her to see lena in her dreams, at the very least. nothing could ever replace the girl's light. after all, lena had single-handedly pulled ead out of the darkness of the priory.
her nails dug in deeper as selda pleaded with her. "no. i do not want your traitorous help. you can burn with them for all i care, selda." she said, coldly. even months ago, ead would have never expected to speak to selda in this manner. "may you find your own soul cleansed of your crimes."
