the rain had been heavy for the last two days. she had relished in being able to use it as an excuse to stay in with silas and avoid her mother. she was fully alert, but eyes remained shut as the rain pattered against the windows. it was otherwise silent, which she still wasn’t quite used to yet.

a text had come through earlier that her mother was demanding her presence. she dreaded the idea but knew she didn’t have a lot to push back on. she’d been avoiding her for weeks.

after some amount of time, her hand reached out, fingers interlacing with his. she still wasn’t entirely used to the cold that she was met with but she brushed it off. there was nothing that would keep her from him.

it seemed that the sun had set, so she didn’t feel guilt for disturbing him now. “hey, sleepyhead.” she teased him, shifting herself into a more comfortable position.

“it’s still raining. you didn’t miss much.” she said. her other hand moved to brush some hair from his face. “i wanted to wait until you were up, but katherine has demanded my presence back home.” she said, a light pout pulling at her features.

“convince me to stay here instead?” she asked. “it won’t be difficult.”

most of sarya's camp had retired for the night, entrusting first watch to herself and one other. she knew him only briefly: a tall, standoffish man from anchor bay. beyond that, she had only been told not to bother trying to strike up conversation with him about anything other than work. fantastic, a long night of silence. pearl heaved a sigh, wishing more than anything she'd been partnered with nessa and her ever consistent jugs of wine that weren't strictly contraband, given they were 'offerings' to her deity.

with only her greatsword in tow pearl made her way to the edge of the camp, enjoying the soft warmth of the fire at her back as she crossed its center. she'd be there until only embers remained, most likely, so it was nice to take in what she could before the cold of the night took its toll.

when she arrived it seemed her partner for the night was already stationed at his post, gazing out into the forest. it seemed almost a shame to interrupt him, but she couldn't go the entire night without saying a word.

"seen something already?" she stepped forward, announcing her presence with the soft crunch of earth underfoot, "didn't expect anything to show up quite so soon, but it saves us from being bored all night I guess."

pearl heaved her sword off her back and stood it against the temporary fence they'd built around the encampment. it wasn't perfect, but it could hold the weight of the weapon. at least if any people were to come through, they'd have to walk directly through the entrance before getting to where sarya was resting.

"how long've you been out here?"

kaito sat near the edge of the encampment. he found the comforts of the fire distracting and the cold night kept him alert. but arguably, he wasn’t used to the forest and the wildlife they encountered. often, the natural movements of natives was enough to keep him on edge.

he had lived in the underbelly of rotting city for most of his life and everything felt foreign to him since leaving. however, he was determined to make a difference to this world. collecting debts and dispatching traitors was nothing more than wasting his life.

astelar had been a world that had only been free from war for a couple of hundred years. most everyone that was alive now had experienced loss, grief and pain — emotional and physical — that could be attributed to war. he was banking on a nazari finding a way to bring lasting peace to astelar once again. all they had to do was find her an army to fight the last war.

he was snapped out of his thoughts at the sound of footsteps close to him. his gaze flicked around immediately before he spotted his watch partner approaching.

“i haven’t spotted anything yet, except what may have been a deer. been about an hour.” he confirmed and settled back down into his sitting position. calen would have noticed they had stole sarya away from emberdeep by now. he assumed they didn’t have the manpower to follow them. “even bandits would know better than to attack a camp like ours. i think it’ll be a quiet watch.”

he sat back slightly and glanced toward the fire. it was already burning low. he hoped that the other would be able to handle the cold. “aren’t you normally paired with nessa for watches?” he asked, his gaze sliding over to her again. “did you two get split up?” he asked. “i don’t have any wine to offer you.”

prom. a heinous excuse to get dressed up and try to smuggle your parents' booze into school... among other things. if it had been up to silas he would've avoided the affair like the plague, but of course he couldn't ignore willow's pleading. this was to be the highlight of her school career, and he'd be damned if he ruined it for her. whatever his argument, none of it would stand against her begging and pleading for him to just suck it up and be a normal guy for one night just to let her have this one thing.

" sure, princess, anything for you. "

he'd tried his best to dress up: a formal jacket thrown over his usual black t shirt and leather pants that could sort of pass for formal from a distance. it was the best she was getting out of him aside from the corsage he'd begged his mother to help him choose.

showing up in his dad's beat up truck probably wasn't the way willow had wanted to be driven to prom, but it was the best he could offer. he didn't even drive regularly, so surely this was an improvement. he could've made her take the bus, after all.

silas inhaled when he reached the door to her home, fully expecting her mother to open it and make a foul comment about him as usual. she'd never acknowledge him trying. raising his fist he knocked his usual pattern, ensuring they knew exactly who was at their door and to never let them forget it.

at least he'd remembered the bouquet his mom had suggested he take over. surely he'd get points for that.

tonight was the culmination of years of her life and the utmost pinnacle of her life so far. willow was far from a perfectionist but tonight? tonight had to be perfect.

as a result of that determination, she had spent hours on hair and makeup today. her mother was lacing her into the baby pink prom dress that she'd chosen months ago when silas' familiar knock echoed from the front door. before katherine could react, she was lifting the layers of bejewelled fabric from the floor to make it easier to run for the door.

she ignored her mother's scolding that followed her down the corridor. she couldn't let her mother answer it and sour silas' mood. everything had to be perfect. her reputation relied on tonight.

she hoped that he had at least tried to dress nicely for the pictures that she wanted to take. however, she knew better than to hold out hope with silas. at the very least, they would both get the crowns tonight. she was sure silas hadn't even thought about that being the reality but it was only natural. she was at the top and he had to be at her side.

she pulled the door open. immediately, her eyes landed on the bouquet of flowers in his hands. silas so rarely bought flowers that it was unexpected. her expression changed from surprise to a warm smile as her gaze moved to his face.

"you got me flowers, babe?" it wasn't a question, more of a distraction for the emotional reaction that welled up. she couldn't cry or she would ruin her makeup. "they're so beautiful."

she moved to take them from him and breathed in the scent. "and you... well, you kind of dressed up." she laughed as she took in his appearance. she moved the skirt of her dress to step back and allow silas in. she placed the flowers down on a side table, knowing her mother or the housekeeper would sort them out by the time they got back tonight.

a kiss was then pressed to silas' cheek, carefully, to avoid the transfer of her lipgloss. "will you finish lacing me up, babe? we can do some pictures here first and then i'll be ready to leave after that." her attention flicked to katherine's entrance momentarily. she could feel the negative energy even from here but paid it no mind.

few places in steepwind felt private enough to tread without fear of discovery. even in those where her affair with the empress was known, xyra was careful to avoid prying eyes where she could. as one of her lady's personal guard she was given a modicum of privacy with alexandria, and tonight she would seize the opportunity with both hands. a twilight stroll through steepwind's gardens would be solitary enough for the pair -- or so she hoped. it was not a place she expected to see the royal siblings at the very least, and the rest of the guard were stationed at their usual posts.

still fully armoured, the knight had opted to leave her helm and glaive at the entrance to the gardens -- none who knew her would be foolish enough to pick up her signature weapon, only perhaps question why she had brought it at all. even off duty, she was still beholden to protect the drehers at a moment's notice.

"lady moon blesses you tonight, alexandria," she hummed, stopping to admire the reflection in both the jewels that adorned the empress's crown and her eyes. though it was no strange feat for mortals to possess eyes of such shining blue, the stark coldness of the dreher lineage seemed reflected in their features, culminating in their gaze. it had scared her once, but now endeared her. alexandria was a castle of ice with infinite hallways to lose oneself in, to freeze almost to death in, but even her coldest corners were melted by the warmth of a hearth within.

"and the garden looks phenomenal as always, your choice of blooms far surpasses those of your father."

alexandria, like all her siblings, and all drehers before her were born in mid-winter. as a result, alexandria often did not find comfort in the more temperate climates like sevierth or bellmere. she certainly did not enjoy the climates of dera or esaria. if she could not see her breath crystallizing in front of her then she found little comfort, knowing that she was so far from home.

however, the plants that grew within these climates were enviable. the gardens had once been a testament to beauty but her father's cruelty had let them fall into a wild jungle.

"the druids maintain the garden well. i hope the palace gardens can return to the grandeur they had from before my father." she said, glancing around their immediate surroundings. she rarely got time to enjoy the gardens as she was often locked within endless council meetings within the palace.

"you flatter me too easily, my love." she said, her expression curling into a warm smile at xyra's admiration. there was nothing she loved more than being made to feel safe and wanted. and xyra -- her knight, her protector, her devotee -- gave her safety in spades. she did not believe in gods but she prayed that none would take xyra from her. "it should not earn you additional favours, but i could not lie to you."

she turned to the flowers growing nearest them and pulled the flower from its stem. delicate fingers offered it out to the elf. "a hellebore. i had them grown for you. their appearance reminds me of you. and i know that you like to see all that you can of the world. i thought i could bring the world to you, my love -- for all that you do for me."
