So I didn’t mean to spend most of the day playing the Coli, but here we are. I put Voryva on my team and holy shit he DECIMATES THINGS. I got an idea for his outfit while playing Coli too, and once I had it made I HAD TO DRAW IT.

Voryva is from Khadjin’s Caravanserai Hatchery! I’d link but Tumblr STILL likes eating my posts whenever I do that >:V

Some quick lore below cut re: how a Banescale ends up at the Cathedral :o

“It's moving— it's mov— MOVE! Get out of the way!”

“Neph! Monarch! SOMEONE!”

“Have you forgotten your place, Hymn?” Nephalem growled; it wasn't as intimidating as when he was in his draconic form, but Hymn bowed her head regardless. Her black attire was in tatters, held together by bone and jagged plate.

“I know I am to stay in the depths below. But—”

“And you broke conduct?” Nephalem asked bitingly, circling the other; she wasn't in her natural dragon form, either, the Sanctuary of the Cathedral too small to allow for it. Piety stood away, hands folded in front of her, her veiled face turned toward the two of them as Nephalem strode around Hymn. “Perhaps Narthex and Letyr are growing lax in their duties to allow you so far. I shall have words with them once we've dealt with you.”

“Please,” Hymn whispered, voice shaking. “I only—there was—”

“Silence,” Nephalem snarled, and Hymn sobbed.

“THERE WAS AN EGG!” She screamed, voice cracking; Nephalem stilled entirely and Piety's head lifted.

“An egg? One of yours?” Nephalem asked harshly, and Hymn shook her head quickly.

“No— not one of mine— but that... that thing of shadows and candles, it took an egg—”

Nephalem and Piety went rigid.

“Prozdire?” Piety whispered, the sudden wave of terror stifling all other sounds to their ears.

Hymn nodded, eyes locking onto the Coatl. “A scaled egg, unlike any other I've seen, but I knew it for what it was.”

“A Banescale,” called a commanding voice from the Sanctuary's entrance; all whom were present turned to see Kato and Yakov striding toward them with somber expressions. They were massive, even in their smaller forms, but it weighed on those present to see even jovial Yakov's face pulled into a grim expression. “Let the beast have it. We've heard rumour of a found hatchery of Banescales, and thieves of all kinds stealing away the eggs for their own profit. A fool has brought one here. It is a blessing that Prozdire took it.”

“It's an egg—” Hymn started, but Kato snarled at her and silenced her again.

“Why the Archbishop deigned to let you live is beyond my understanding, and as such I will not suffer to hear a murderer's pleas for clemency.”

“Clemency for an egg,” calls another voice, and a ripple of unease filtered across the gathering.

Voryva strode toward them, and Kato's expression shifted from wariness to rage. “What is that you hold, Pearlcatcher?”

“An egg,” replied Voryva calmly, staring up at Kato; in his arms was cradled a scaled egg, and Hymn's ragged expression shifted into immense relief. Voryva looked to Nephalem directly and no other. “Prozdire still lurks below, but I collected the egg from him as he tried to move it into the furthest reaches of the catacombs. I believe he meant to destroy it.”

“We were just discussing—”

“—How you wouldn't bother with it. I know.” Voryva's voice was cold. “You meant to leave it to the shadows.”

Kato growled, “It is a Banescale—”

“It is an egg,” Voryva interrupted. “And it holds a dragon who has done nothing to earn your ire save for existing. It is in my care, now,” he states, keeping his eyes locked on Nephalem, causing all those gathered to turn their eyes to the Archbishop.

The Archbishop slowly sighed through his nose. “You are responsible for it, and will answer for its actions.”

“Naturally.” Voryva turned and strode away, making Kato growl at Nephalem.

“You mean to just let him keep the egg? After—”

“Everyone deserves a chance,” says Piety as she strides closer to the group. “As evidenced by Voryva himself. But the circumstances do not escape my notice,” she adds, her veiled face turning toward Hymn, who recoils slightly. “And I would have them... examined.”

Nephalem nodded. “Kato, Yakov. I give you temporary charge of Hymn. Employ whomever you need to in order to discover how this egg came to be here, and how Prozdire obtained it. Use whatever methods you deem necessary.”

Hymn's heart thudded heavily in her chest as the two Gaolers nodded dutifully.

so I got a Light Egg on my first gathering turn, then a chest was holding a Noct Egg, and Lore-wise Voryva has a Banescale egg, so... apparently Voryva is just collecting them

Re: Pearls as Magical Foci for Pearlcatchers

That anon got me thinking about it again, whoops. I decided to use Voryva as an example, and since he’s Arcane, his magic looks different from all the other flights, my idea being that each flight has a specific look to their magic. But for this post I’ll be using Arcane visuals.

Without a focus, magic can be wild and untamed, and lack any real substance. Maybe some elder dragons who’ve devoted their life to studying and perfecting magic can command the magic to act accordingly, but without a focus for most, it looks kind of like this mess:

It’s all over the place, the runes half-formed and lacking uniform. There’s some power there, definitely, but it’s directionless and takes a lot of will to direct. Sornieth’s magic is canonically chaotic what with crapping out random eggs and causing mutations (eye types, and in my head, scatter scrolls, but that’s for another post if people are interested). It’s wild and erratic, and in my personal lore the mastery of magic is a sign of status and power because of how chaotic it is.

And now we delve further into my personal head canon stuff:

With a magical focus, it makes channeling that magic much easier:

A PC’s Pearl, I think, would be the perfect focus for them. Due to the nature in which it is created, it has a very personal connection to the PC. If the PC in particular uses a lot of magic, I can see the memories that they add into the pearl being infused with whatever type of magic they use, and thus accrue a natural magical affinity.

As a result, of course, other dragons can literally feel the power radiating off any pearl used as a focus. Some might be drawn to it out of curiosity or even wanting to steal it to use themselves. The pearl would never work as well for them as it would for the original PC owner, but it still can; kind of like HP wands. If a thief continues to handle the pearl, though, they might be able to ‘feel’ the former owner’s memories; maybe emotions, maybe glimpses of the memories. After all, it’s still Sornieth with its chaotic magic, and without the original PC the pearl probably loses some of its focusing prowess. Still works better than no focus, though.

YALL I found out last night that this one song i’ve been WAITING for finally has its own vid, Dzivia’s Voryva (link), sO i can listen to it on repeat, and idk I got so excited I named this guy Voryva and drew him so yeah that happened.

Voryva is from @khadjin-fr‘s Caravanserai, and I don’t know what his apparel is going to be yet, so I kinda fudged it on the drawing, I might draw him again later when I get it figured out.

Lore-wise I got the idea that he’s one of the few (if not the only) dragon to retain some of his draconic characteristics in his humanoid form, which makes the other dragons in the Cathedral wary of him and regard him as rather powerful to be able to do so. (I need to write a few things for the clan’s lore I know this seems random but there’s a theme going on here I promise)
