Unusual ask: Sign This Pledge
So The Young Turks, which is a progressive news outlet and has helped start things such as Justice Democrats and Wolf-Pac, has a pretty great idea to clearly who find out who are the progressives in the 2020 race. They have a pledge they’re asking people to sign. It has 5 basic elements:
1. Higher wages. e.g. $15/hr 2. Healthcare for all. 3. Green New Deal (decarbonize in 10 years) 4. College for All 5. Get Money Out Of Politics
To me, these are all positions I completely agree with. I know a number of candidates have already signed (e.g. Bernie), and a number have explained how they’re into 3 or 4 of the ideas, but not all 5. (e.g. I remember one candidate, maybe delaney, say that he wants to phase out fossil fuels over 30 years. Which is fine, but I really don’t think we have that much time. I want to see BIG action NOW. Anyways...)
The point in getting average americans to sign is to show where our values are, what we mean by “progressive values” (though those 5 certainly don’t cover all progressive subjects, but they’re a baseline), and to put pressure on politicians who call themselves “progressive” *cough*cough*Biden*cough*cough* to either sign or explain why they don’t and how they consider themselves progressive.
