#queens turned out for our Catalina Cruz who was officially sworn in to the NYS Assembly. Caught her emotional here. So many reps showed up to congratulate her- our Danny Dromm of course, but Sen Chuck Schumer! John Liu, Melissa Mark- Veveritos, Melinda Katz, even Julissa Ferraras-Copeland’s mother! -there were about 20 elected officials. And it was standing room people from all over Jackson Heights, Corona, and Elmhurst. She is our first DREAM-er elected on the east coast, the first in NYS, the 3rd DREAM-er elected nationwide. This is the beginning. New York will be a leader in Immigration Rights, Women’s Health, Abortion Access. So much happened last week in Catalina’s first week in office, and I know much if it was in the works- but she voted for it! Some of the things I keep thinking about:Tish James speaking powerfully about how Catalina is an inspiration to all girls; (can’t remember who) saying the symbol of this country is the Statue of Liberty, NOT a border wall; and Carmen (I think?) reminding us of the words “we the people” - “not we the citizens”- it was truly inspiring. Also Danny Dromm was called “the queen of Queens!” Think globally act locally, right? The women in my district- CC, Jessica Ramos, and AOC- truly give me hope that out of these ashes and ashes and ashes real change will come. We are working inside and outside the system.
