This seems to be a concern to many people across the US, especially with voting season just down the corner. I have seen many text-posts and instagram info-graphs speaking about the subject, so I decided to do a little deep-digging of my own to figure out what this may or may not be about.
As it turns out, many, if not all, states in America have somehow managed to “clean up” their voting rolls, by taking tens of thousands of names off their lists. What does this really mean? Well, apparently this is actually something they are meant to do by federal law, this is called voting “list maintenance”. However, this practice is typically used to mark off people who haven’t voted in the past two federal elections, moved state, or seemingly passed away. Here is where things have been going wrong: According to NPR, 300,000 people in Georgia were removed from the voters list, with 22,000 of those people reporting back as an error. This is not the only state with this proportioning. All the other states are also major swaying states, that would have large impacts on the outcome of the election.
By many advocacy groups, whether they be liberal or conservative are calling this “purging” either as a scare tactic, or a way to get more traction on the subject. Both political sides seem to be afraid of this because it would deeply affect either one. Liberals are scared because many of the names removed are seemingly young voters, or minority groups. This is scary for conservatives because this fills the polls with inaccurate votes, and makes voting fraud much easier to achieve. However, this is more apparent to hurt the left than the right.
Why are so many people afraid of this? What does the president have to do with this? Well, keeping up with the election news, and keeping up with Mr. Presidents twitter account, has been a ride to say the least. With Donald Trump saying he may move the election, or get rid of mail-in ballots, this certainly looks like a more legal rendition of the Watergate scandal. Many “Red State” state governors have also been going along with this, or have been placing new laws to kick people off the ballots. For example, in Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee just set a new law that residents will get kicked of the ballots for peacefully protesting outside of the CourtHouse. Many instances like these are spreading across the country, which is what’s making people more wary than ever about the president.
Note: Just remember to check your voting status frequently, and talk about why you may believe you were removed. This is an extremely odd thing to be done right before an election, especially with the amount of numbers they are pulling at the moment. This will certainly be a messy time.
You can correct any facts I missed or got wrong. I am trying to speak from an objective stance and share news.
