Johnny Votta was an old man who for years would stand on a street off Washington Square Park and help hurry students along to their classes, blocking cars to keep them safe.  He died something over a week ago and the students put up a memorial to him (which is the first I knew about him, I'm never up that early and downtown). They called him "The Timekeeper," hence the clock motif of the memorial.  This is the kind of thing that reminds you New Yorkers are not as cold and heartless as they're sometimes portrayed.
