Bengali Verb Conjugations Class I Example করা | To Do
This example uses the verb করা [kɔra], which is a CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) verb, because when the ending, -a, is dropped, the stem that remains makes that pattern. The low stem for this example is “kɔr” and the high stem is “kôr”. In this case, the spelling of the stem hardly ever changes, but pronunciation does. The inherent vowel is invisible so you cannot actually see this change on paper; other verbs in this class will have visible spelling differences. High stems are written in green and low stems are written in red.
While CVC and VC verbs share the same class, VC verbs retain the low stem for most of the future tense conjugations, which I have written in gold. Otherwise, both patterns mutate vowels the same way. All verbs with stems following the CVC or VC patterned stems will follow this chart (unless they’re explicitly irregular).
