I’m gonna talk about aging-up characters in order to ship them with adult characters. And for this example I’ll be using the characters Violet Parr and Voyd (Karen) from Incredibles 2 since I’ve made a couple posts that have gotten controversial opinions in them. If you haven’t seen Incredibles 2, I suggest not reading yet just for the sake of spoilers.
Aging-up a character for a sexual relationship with an adult is wrong.
Yes. Yes. Absolutely 100% yes it’s wrong. No one should use the power of au and headcanon just to make a child be legal in order to have sex with an adult. Violet should not be made ‘older’ UNLESS it is for the sake of character development, growth, and having the ship as a secondary/backburner type of deal.
What aging-up should be used for.
Anything but fetishism and porn. For instance in my au’s and headcanon Violet grows up to be a pretty badass super hero who struggles with the balance of living a successful and normal life and being pressured with fulfilling her responsibilities as a super hero along with her family. With her grown up it brings new challenges and interesting scenarios to bring to the table- and it also provides character growth. It makes you think about how the character could be developed. The moment I saw Voyd on the screen- I instantly connected her with Violet by mannerism and generally a similar vibe.
The grown-up, au, fictional Violet in my head. NOT the child who was kicking ass and taking names on screen.
I saw Voyd as an interesting part of the au I created and another way for Violet’s character and growth to continue (maybe by questioning her sexuality? Put THAT on top of the list of things she needs to worry about like geeze). It was my mistake to naively forget the implications of what a relationship also potentially brings with it- the physical and sexual aspect.
Shipping Violet and Voyd in their current state is wrong, that goes for other ships that have similar issues (Spideypool, WendyDip, etc...).
Shipping Violet to ANY adult character and making that her only characteristic is also wrong.
The usage of ‘Older!Violet’ should not be an excuse and is wrong and promotes people who have this fetish, that was my mistake.
But! I will not stop shipping Violet and Voyd in the wonderful and interesting au I’ve created in my head. I will continue thinking of ideas for Violet as a grown super hero- like what her costume would be, what her name would be, or even expanding the world using her character to explore!- and I will also think about what it would be like if she ever entertained the thought of dating a female superhero.
