Selling on Amazon in a new state? You need a GSTIN there first.
A mistake I keep seeing with new e-commerce sellers in India: they ship inventory to an Amazon fulfilment centre in another state before getting GST registration for that state.
GST in India is state-wise. A Telangana GSTIN does not cover a warehouse in Haryana. To store stock at that warehouse legally, you need two things:
A registered address in that state to obtain a fresh GSTIN. This is where a virtual place of business is used — a real commercial address with a notarised NOC, rent agreement and utility bill, without renting an actual office.
The warehouse itself added as an additional place of business on that GST certificate.
Miss step two and marketplaces block your inbound shipments. Miss step one and the registration is rejected outright.
Renting an office in every state is not realistic for most sellers. Services offering VPOB and APOB for Amazon sellers handle both filings together, usually within days rather than the six to eight weeks an external agency takes.
Worth understanding before you plan your next state launch.
