In homestuck, numerous classification systems are introduced which have been utilized for wonderful fan creations, as they allow a neat way to both see yourself in this world, and to understand yourself much deeper. One system which is often overlooked, however, is the Vriskale - a series of opinions on the character Vriska Serket, regarding a phenomena known as ‘Vriskourse’. Each fan of the series holds exactly ONE of these opinions (no more, no less).
THE VRISKALE:
1. 'Vriska did nothing wrong' - Woefully misinformed. You committed the sin of ‘skipping to act five', and even after that you skipped through the 'boring parts. Or you just haven't actually read homestuck, and all of your knowledge instead comes from memes surrounding the series.
2. 'Vriska is a morally ambiguous character at best and we should not categorize these characters by whether they are 'good' nor 'evil' but rather the quality of their characterization itself' - Wow based!! (vou either kin her or you act like an eighth grade english teacher when it comes to this series).
3. 'Vriska did EVERYTHING wrong she ATE my GRANDMA and I HATE HER!!!!!!! GRAHHHH' - Also woefully misinformed. She did not eat your grandma (that was me :3).
4. 'I do not care whether or not she is morally reprehensible. Rather, hummina hummina hummina bazooooooooing! *eyes pop out* ARO000000OGA! *jaw drops tongue rolls out* WOOF WOOF’ - You are Andrew Hussie.
Homestuck confession: I really REALLY don't understand the Vriskourse™ hahsha. She's a murderer, she's a pirate, she's a traumatized teenage troll that traumatized and killed a lot of other teenage trolls. And?
Hahsha no, like literally. And? She's THE character. Where the discourse even comes from? I mean, I get that she being the tool of the Deus Ex Machina doesn't gain you awesomeness points but does it matter?? She had that AMAZING arch in the dream bubbles just to be swept back into the status quo, I get it, but that's not fault of the character itself, IS IT?
Seriously, where the hate comes from to be worth of multiple fucking 88+ pages threads?? From the murder? Be fucking real. Outside the diaries of the Marquise an other bullshit when never actually saw how Alternia was but we were all conscious that it was fucking Murder Planet™.
An suddenly "MURDER?? IN MY MURDER PLANET??" Gooooood forbid women do aaaaaaaaanything. WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING!!!
I fucking love Vriska. She's a walking disaster and every spiderweb she plotted ended in catastrophic and chaotic reactions and it was amazing to see. All the [Make her pay]??? To see how far and how ridiculous was her plan just for the sake of being a gilboss bitch??
I'm really sorry for the part of the fandom that clearly cannot handle something more bitchy than Veggitales HAHAHAH. Vriska IS the character. She'd try to kill JFK by mind-controlling half of Dallas, make them all kill each other, take advantage of the chaos to use her dices to make the car explode just to find...
That Terezi poisoned his coffee back in the morning and the ol'slut kicked the bucket fifteen minutes ago.
(I love the fact that my blorbo is Karkat but let's be real what is to be said about Karkat hahaha. Instead, VRISKA?? I could make 88 pages threads just about how much I want to study her HAHAHAH. No wonder why they brought her back)
Alright, so now that it seems I'm actually going to be using my tumblr for the first real time since I created it 3 years ago, I've gotta start with something. And honestly, what better way to inaugurate my introduction to the Homestuck fandom at large and to spur on some interaction than to state my opinions on the infamous spider girl herself, Vriska Serket. I'm sure that this is a flawless idea that will have no consequences whatsoever.
I suppose this train of thought begins with something I realized when desperately pawing through liveblogs for someone whose homestuck experience was similar to my own. Specifically, by figuring out which blogs I liked and which I did not, I narrowed down what my own opinions were by process of elimination. It started with simply those who were unenthusiastic or frustrated at the mysteries of the comic, shortly before I also nixed those who vehemently hated any of the trolls for their intrinsic character traits (If I had a nickel for every blog that posted a huge essay-rant about how Gamzee's willful ignorance is the worst thing to ever exist, an intrinsic moral flaw, and completely opposite to anything civilized, I'd have two nickels). When I got to Vriska's introduction, however, I really figured out what was going on.
As always, reading liveblogs, watching livereads, or really any media form of re-experiencing a favorite through others, is about finding your own emotions mirrored in someone else, vicariously re-experiencing the emotions you felt upon your first experience with the topic. And to that end; I could finally pin down my own opinions on dear Vriska.
Vriska, to me, is a deeply tragic character. She's been traumatized and manipulated and used since her youth, and the scars and coping mechanisms she developed from all of that lead her to only repeat the cycles of violence, running others and herself into the ground. While of course I hated her upon introduction, you'd be pretty heartless not to, it quickly turned to feeling bad for her upon further information. It becomes clear pretty quickly that all of her terrible actions are consequences themselves of what she's been through and the worldviews she's developed to cope with that.
Her complex about being strong vs being weak follows pretty directly from her upbringing; she had to be stronger than other strolls, the strongest, even, to keep spidermom fed, and to avoid injury herself she had to go after the weakest other trolls. And she's doing them a favor, really, 8ecause if she was weak then she'd 8e eaten herself; so really she's just saving them the trou8le of dying in a worse way! She can't bring herself to feel real remorse for her actions, because if she ever does then she'd be crushed under everything she's done. And I mean really, this is a 13 year old who's killed hundreds of other children since she was like 8, that's not something that she can just accept without shattering. And as always, she's just doing what she has to to survive, so in her mind it was always necessary. She falls into the trap that deeply hurt characters often do, in that she only sees one option that isn't weakness or death, and becomes blind to any other way.
I would never say that Vriska has done nothing wrong, because she very obviously has, in so many ways. But a character doesn't need to be free of all wrongdoing to be worth sympathy, even if you don't forgive them. And that's what I was looking for in livebloggers, that peculiar combination of hate and pity (hah) that has always been my experience with her. I just want her to have a happy ending, not to forget what she's done but to atone and feel remorse and finally be able to be at peace with herself. She almost gets that after years in the dream bubbles pre-retcon, after being forced to accept that she doesn't have anything more to do, after finally being free of any plans or webs, of having all of her irons out of the fire and firmly out of reach. But of course, we don't see any more of that after Terezi:Remem8er.
Either way, she's a uniquely compelling character in her own right, one I might even give a similar pedestal to Zuko in How To Write a Sympathetic Bad Guy. Unlike Zuko's archetypal and fantastic redemption, her story and arc is meandering and erratic, her actions grey and her morals suspect, even at the end of the story. But it is truly masterful to have such an organic character, one who flouts conventions and simplicity so regularly, become such a presence in a fandom as to be known even to those who don't know anything else about Homestuck.
idk if ya'll have heard about the kwite situation but one of the people involved is a self proclaimed vriska defender which has caused people to start bringing back vriscourse which is like. insane to me. fictional murderer vriska is not the thing to focus on here
We do know about the Kwite situation, or at least I do.
Watch Kwite's video for more details but to summarize and INCREDIBLY simplify it, Kwite was abused and falsely accused of SA by a Vriska fan friend.
I think we should all remember that these are real people involved and no matter what character someone likes or dislikes doesn't define who they are as a person. It's best to separate the real world situation from the fictional fandom involvement and treat the people as they are; people.
If it's any consolation, one of my very old friends is a Vriska fan and she's the sweetest person I've ever met.
Not to say Vriska isn't a terrible character who hasn't done terrible things, but there's real people that were hurt and character preference has nothing to do with these atrocious actions.
YES vriska did extremely terrible things!!! YES she had motivations for doing them that didn't justify them! but they did explain them!
vriska did nothing wrong-ers AND vriska is irredemable-ers are both seeing vriska wrong
What would you do if you saw someone openly kinning vriska in 2022.
people will really try to be like “ugh why do you hate X character for doing X thing when Y character did Y thing and you like them?” and sure, let’s take, idk, Terezi and Vriska. both did some fucked up shit. both were raised in a fucked-up society and fed a bunch of trolls to Vriska’s lusus. Terezi even straight-up led both Dave and John to their deaths, and regardless of her feelings about it afterwards, she still DID that. so why do Vriska’s actions seem to get her so hated?
it’s pretty easy to see why. very few people know someone who directly led to someone’s death on purpose. and the timeline shit involved in Dave’s? yeah, that situation just isn’t presented to us in reality. but everybody knows a Vriska. everybody knows someone who’s manipulative, who victim-blames those they abuse, who twists people’s words around and makes things all about them. they know people who are ableist as fuck, who are cruel and spiteful, and regardless of what made them that way, their actions are still just as fucked up and wrong.
we can brush off the ridiculousness of Eridan and his doomsday devices, but everybody knows someone who is just as insufferable. we can’t always look past those qualities, especially en masse, no matter how “good” those characters end up being in their actions because, fundamentally, we know those people far too well, and seeing people excuse their actions makes us rightfully disgusted. and that’s not to say you can’t like a certain character. i fucking love Vriska as a character. i think she’s a fucked-up, horrible person and i love to see (Vriska) reflect on that. but don’t come for people who see too much of their reality in characters like these. chill.
