With a lack of siblings and a lack of a cool house where friends WOULD want to hang out at, Pierce never really had roommates or anything before. Not a big problem, he thought, because roommates were always super cool and stuff anyway, right? He at least hoped so. He did at least meet the girl beforehand, so it wouldn't be too awkward walking into a room with an absolute stranger.

He did walk into the room, though. With an almost absolute stranger. And it was probably awkward. But that was the least of his worries. The room was... bare. Like, ridiculously bare, and although he had a smile on his face, there was definitely an air of uncertainty around him. 

"...Yo... You around?"

But then he realised he was able to look around the entire room without trouble. It was a good way to announce his presence at the very least, and at the very best it wouldn't sound weird if Rumi was indeed not around. Yes, this was simply the best choice of dialogue at the time being.
