Okay so this interaction between Cleo and Legs in Episode 2 has been stuck in my mind ever since watching Cleo’s POV because of one line from Legs:

“Cleo, I might be educated but please do not mistake me for one who came from wealth.”

This line is never expanded upon but it reveals quite a bit about Doc’s life, and I feel like it gets overlooked when thinking about his backstory.

This explains a lot about his hatred of Scott and gives him another thing in common with Owen (as if he needed any more narrative parallels with that man). It gives some thought into how much choice he had in the things he did as a soldier. Perhaps the fact that he had to work that extra bit harder to get a good education explains why he was so angry at Avid for trying to practice vampire medicine.

Now we don’t actually know how much wealth this actually means- whether he’s saying he’s not Scott or (supposedly) Martyn levels of rich, or whether he lived in absolute poverty. I do kinda doubt he was as hard-done-by as Owen or Cleo (a good education is still a privilege no matter how you spin it). I like the idea of him having to rely on scholarships and bursaries while also having to work other odd jobs to put himself through med school. Tired, overworked characters my beloved. (Food for the college AUs).

I just think it’s interesting because it’s the only bit of lore we learn about his life before the military or getting his medical degree (whichever you think came first).

While watching the footage from Scott, Pyro & Owen's episode 5 videos I happened to notice that each of them edited out different parts of their conversation about "recruiting" new vampires, which compelled me to piece them together as best I could.

I know it's a relatively minor scene, so idk if anyone else will be interested in seeing an as-complete-as-possible version of it, but working on it was good practice!

I also have some Thoughts about Pyro's reactions here and what they signal about his uneasy relationship with the two elder vampires. So, if you're interested you can find them below the cut.

So if you watch the video you may notice that as Owen and Scottt start discussing recruitment, Pyro stops in the middle of what he's doing, lets out a quiet huff or scoffing kind of sound, and then just stands in place just watching Scott & Owen mine and talk for a few minutes before he resumes helping them.

And, I'd like to note, he only starts helping out again & offers them helpful info & suggestions after confirming they plan to turn someone willing.

(and I will admit that while his reaction is featured in this edit, it isn't as noticable as it is in his original video. Here's a link to approximately the start of the scene if you want to give it a watch yourself)

Anyways, his reaction was subtle enough that the emotion behind it is open to interpretation. Is it disbelief that they're planning to recruit someone else? Disapproval of them wanting to? Wariness about who they plan to turn and how? I can only bring up a few of the options.

Now this is particularly interesting to me partly because if you watch this scene from Scott and Owen's perspective? They are completely oblivious. Owen doesn't even include the full discussion in his video (even though he's the one who started it!!!) and Scott doesn't hear Pyro react and Pyro stopping to look at him comes off as unremarkable.

Also, funnily enough, the one thing Pyro's perspective lacks is how he suggested sending Ren a letter about meeting up and Scott immediately shot it down for seeming too suspicious. Guess he'd rather not think about his Sire making fun of his idea to his face!

So yeah, if you can't tell I enjoy observing how everyone's choosing to spin their characters' narrative by picking and choosing what moments to include in their videos.
