Well, university is over... you know what that means...
So Avids pov ... that was great! Confirmed my theory that Avid was not thinking at all and going very crazy in the entirety of episode 7! Hurray! I don't have too much to add about V!Avid that I haven't talked about before, aside from a few details, but wow! Loved it!
Anyways... I kinda of promised that after watching Avid's pov I would get my thoughts out on this one thing... so... my apologies...
AVISCOTT RANT (this is gonna be a long one)
So first I gotta say, ship and let ship man! I have weirder ships, this is just my silly opinion on it as a part of this series's canon? and a bit on how people see it! Spoilers I'm not the biggest fan!
So the most obvious issue with the ship is the timing of it, it really doesn't have enough time to cook, to properly set their relationship. They only really have 2 episodes were you could argue there is a significant amount of build up of their relationship and throughout most of episode 6, Avid isn’t even fully with the vampires and in episode 7... well.... you know...
The other big issue I have with it is the framing of their relationship, witch really, is a problem I have with the series and with the fan reaction to it (in part).
Avid is a young, imature, deranged and stressed person that doesn't know what he is doing, i. e. every single teenager/young adult in existence who is also dealing with 2 magical curses, and Scott is a nobleman, 1000+ year old vampire that uses manipulation and charm to get what he wants and doesn't know the meaning of losing. And for some reason people think this is a FLUFFY SHIP??? WHAT.
Ok, now for real, throughout ep 6 Avid is torn between staying with the humans or going with the vampires and Scott is trying to convince Avid to go with the vampires, he does this by basicaly telling Avid that the humans were going to try to kill him if Avid stayed in town... witch is a lie, Avid had already told the Doc, who accepted Avid btw, and the humans, at this point, were still trying to talk with the vampires, so even if they all found out about him, Avid whouldn't be in danger... even if it wasn't a lie though, Scott didn't say it to protect Avid but to scare them into the vampire's side!
This is the clearest way Scott manipulates Avid later in the series, but it isn’t the only one, the way Scott tells him in ep 7 that Avid wouldn't be in danger of being killed by any vampires if he is usefull... ya not very healthy...
But there is another, in my opinion, bigger issue, witch maybe cames from the lack of development their relationship has, but does Avid even like Scott? Like genuenly? Cause I didn't really see any evidence of that...
Sure Avid calls Scott hot... so does everyone, I am sure Drift and Shelby and Sausage and Cleo and Pearl, etc, aren't meant to be all unconditionally and romanticaly in love with Scott... plus being attractive is part of why Scott manages to charm and captivate people and almost everyone coments on it, just calling him pretty doesn't read as being in love...
In ep 7 you have the kiss on the mouth but, Avid hasn't been thinking about what he is doing since turning stage 2, he is kissing Scott because they are excited to burn the walls and there is a person in front of him! Their interactions beforehand seem more of Avid just doing whatever he wants and having fun, than an actual meaningfull conversation with Scott. Avid doesn't even think about the kiss... like ever! He just kissed Scott and moved on!
Scott does have conflicting feelings about the kiss but not because he is in love with Avid but because he thinks Avid is in love with him!
I know there is the whole, vampirism as a queer alegory, but its an alegory, its not a one to one perfect retelling of the queer experience! Plus Scott's part in Avid's accepting himself is... clearly just manipulative and for Scott's personal gain... and honestly accepting yourself doesn't mean becaming what you were tought being what you are is, i.e. a danger to society that doesn't think about the consequences of their actions, but simply being able to be yourself and accept all you are... a level of acceptance that Avid never gets to have! Not to mention that just because it can be read as a queer alegory doesn't mean it needs to have a romantic paring to go with it, there are many ways of being queer!
All of this doesn't make Aviscott a bad ship in my opinion (I would be a hypocrite if a ship being abusive meant it was bad! Majorscythe truther for life!), but its defenitly not as relevant and healthy as the way the series as a whole and the fandom typically see it, specially when it cames to Avid's feelings for Scott!
It makes sense that Scott and Shelby would think it was love, we are talking about the elder vampire that probably never had a healthy relationship/friendship before his slumber and the person whose perception of friendships and relationships comes mostly from fiction. Its not crazy to say they might be missing some things, but because everyone is convinced there is something more here and the only person that could disprove it is dead... it ends up being framed as this perfect tragic relationship!
What I specially dislike though is the way I see some people completly disregard Scott's wrongdoings and reducing his development as "Avid fixed him"... sure Avid's death had an impact on Scott, but it didn't change him. It simply made Scott realise just how much he truly cared about his fledglings and that his coven's survival was more important to him than winning this war! If anyone "fixed Scott" it was Shelby!
All of this to say that in my opinion this ship does have allot of potential in the fandom space! However in the story itself? It really doesn't feel like this big thing... And the way it is idolised as this "what could have been" etherial relationship that transformed Scott into a better person... no... just no!
I want to talk about the finale hopefully soon! Can you guys tell I have an obcession with this series... and I have been holding back so...
Finally I just want to say that this was just a silly analysis and for you to take this with a grain of salt! I tried to be as impartial in my watch of Avid's pov, but trully, Aviscott is one of those ships that I would have never really been obcessed with... some ships just seem to be made specifically so you would dislike it and Aviscott is very much it for me, but there are objective issues I have with it that I thought would be important to share!
