in canon, ema is a homicide detective – not her dream job, which she’s definitely bitter about, but a step in the right direction. she has a lot of role models in law enforcement to look up to, defense attorneys and prosecutors and officers who have all had a major impact on her.
in this au, though, it’s a lot different by virtue of those people not existing in her life. instead, she’s an ex-cop who got on the wrong side of a corrupt department, and her trust in law enforcement has subsequently flown out the window. don’t get her wrong, she still wants to be a forensic scientist and use her skills to catch the bad guy –
– but this time, she’s doing it all on her own terms. (if there isn’t evidence enough to convict someone, she’s not above making it herself.)
also, she’s in the service industry during the day, and unsurprisingly isn’t all that fond. all in all, she’s likely better off in canon.
