in retrospective jax is the worst character of them all, because of the way he is using the circus. as soon as he has this realization (the same one that he tells pomni in the gun episode) that its all just digital/fictional/not real and theres no reason to care, i think all this time he's been acting his true self.

i do believe that "the funny one" spiel is meant to symbolise the irony-poisoning and the "it's just a prank" or "im just joking" types of people that will do or say heinous shit and pretend like you're the one in the wrong for taking it too seriously. and its prevalent online because you can hide behind your amazing digital avatar and be, let's say, a bigot, that you cant be IRL because you'd be curbstomped, and have nobody be able to do anything about it. because its not technically real!

thats why he's been doing all of this. because he can't drive people to suicide by isolation IRL, that's illegal! and he can't sexually harrass/physically assault women IRL, that's also illegal (and these women could beat him up)! and notice how much he just does a clap back after a clap back, reminds you of something? doesnt it just make you want to upvote him, give him a reddit gold, perchance? (sarcasm)

thats why an important part of the gun episode was pomni running and laughing maniacally. That was Her idea of No Consequences. it wasnt about "lets see how many people i can hurt cause theyre stuck with me and cant do anything about the predicament", for her it was about "i can run around and laugh and not care what society thinks. these guns look real but we respawn so its kind of like VR laser tag and i can finally have some time to wind down after all this"

and she was still fine after that realisation! she didn't start being mean or sabotaging anything because her freedom was not in other's suffering

jax is just like that cause that is the choice he made. the choice to consider the other digital avatars as objects he can have fun with without the law stopping him. knowing fully that these digital avatars, like him, also came from somewhere and are real people

as an aside, i think its okay to be mean to npcs as okay as it is to be empathetic towards them. id be so down if jax only abused npcs because they are lines of code. like who didnt slice soldiers in skyrim or drowned their sims in the pool

but just because its other, (in-universe) real people it makes it so horrible. its like the guy shouting in vc in a ranked game or purposefully ruining the game by cheating/targeting/whatever

like ok dude why should i be the stress relief to whatever you got going on with your life that led you to be awful. Ohhh right. The fact that the consequences online are mostly Minimal (get banned and make another account duhh)

the worst that came out of that abuse apologia shitshow is the moment where jax preemptively tells people to Not believe Ribbit on whatever she says, AFTER already isolating her and avoiding her attempts at communication/making amends to the point where the only way out that she saw was suicide

and to see people go "oh jax just like me fr" fills me with nothing but dread. there is hope that most of these people are just relating on the surface reading of "oh he's a silly guy but he's also depressed! arent we all? so relatable!" or think that none of it matters because it's fictional and surely no people ever used fiction to bring ideas to the masses... but its so bleak
