“Collecting print images of cross-dressed actresses allowed moviegoing girls to vicariously enjoy gender variance, to experience the world from a borrowed male-passing perspective without being encumbered by attendant social responsibilities. This shift in standpoint might have been presented as inconsequential or comedic onscreen, but its impact on certain female spectators seems meaningful and lasting. Kodaks stored in college memory books and personal scrapbooks confirm that, throughout the 1910s, working, middle-class, and moneyed moviegoing girls cross-dressed in their day-to-day, embracing it as a form of transformative play. Some did it publicly, in stage performances organized by schools and churches. Others did it privately, in dorm rooms and secluded backyards, in the company of their female-presenting peers. In either situation, wearing masculine attire elicited a smile from the photographed girls.”
