Time for some service! What you have just read is a letter I sent via email to the President of Colombia, Mr Iván Duque. You will notice it is written in Spanish which collides with the general pattern of this CAS portfolio (I forced myself to do it this way to keep my English from getting too rusty), but I thought it would be better this way since at the end of the day whoever receives this letter will be a fellow Spanish speaker.
Jani García is an environmental activist who fights against corporations and economic interests in a country which isn’t precisely a bulwark of safety, Colombia. She has been threatened several times but has managed to become one of the ten cases that are being supported by Amnesty International in 2020 through the “Write for Rights” platform.
I chose to research her case in particular because the environmental fight has always called my attention. I certainly think this activity has helped me to make good progress in Learning Outcome #6. I have learnt of the perilous situation some activists are in and also their heroism in continuing their fight just because their principles oblige them to. Truly fascinating people. All my support for Jani.
