To the Egyptians, as to many people, the eye was extremely important. We still say that ‘the eye is the mirror of the soul’; and many people today, in Egypt and elsewhere, fear the Evil Eye. Hence, the Divine Eye was, to the Egyptians, a symbol of great significance. It could take many forms—Edjo, Tefnut and Hathor, for instance, were each known as the Eye of Re; the Wadjet-eye of Horus had religious and protective connotations.
