cowboy ghost who overhears an argument/confrontation between rancher price and his adult daughter, something something price asking why do you never call home? something something, reader scoffing but teary eyed bc "what? like you? I wouldn't hear jack shit from you for weeks, months!! on end, all my life until 3 months ago! so, why do I never call? I guess it never occurred to me." reader knows, in a way, it's not fair, he father couldn't call her and her mother couldn't get in contact with him either. but when she thinks back to being a child and asking where her daddy was, and all she got to patch the ever growing pit in her stomach was vague placating from her mother; she remembers the sinkhole feeling, how she eventually stopped asking to stop reopening the wound. And she thinks, that wasn't fair either.

cowboy ghost who is now wishing he had never developed hearing in the first place, proactively stopping him from ever eavesdropping on this in the first place, is silently stomping away into tall grass oblivion. he's torn, he's angry. how dare you speak to your father life that after all he's done for you? when he was, bottom line, not an explosive, abusive piece of shit. if you feel distant from your father, he thinks you're fucking lucky you're not gladly pissing on his grave. you're lucky he never laid hands on you, you're lucky you have what he never did.

but didn't he?

if there was anyone befitting the title of pseudo-father in ghost's life, it would be price. you just didn't know your dad like he did. how he shaped and molded him, you would never understand the things he did to keep ghost and the rest of the 141 alive. including taking him under his wing to get him out of service. you could never understand the depth of the heart of your father.

which is fucking shame. maybe price should've been there for you. maybe he wouldn't be here anymore but maybe that would be okay. maybe you'd have a man who could read you & meet you where you're at as a father, instead of him.

and maybe he's mad that price isn't perfect. it's the only thing he has now. it's the only thing he's had in a long time, and he's not infallible. not even at home. how could he be anything, how could he have anything when even you are slipping through your father's hands?
