Wakefield Poole
On this day in queer history: 29 December 1971
Wakefield Poole’s Boys in the Sand premiered in New York City at the 55th Street Playhouse, redefining what gay cinema could be. Shot on Fire Island, the film was slickly produced, openly erotic, and unapologetically visible at a time when gay life was still largely hidden.
The film marked a dramatic break from earlier low-budget gay pornography. It was the first gay porn film to include on-screen credits, to achieve crossover success, and to be reviewed by Variety, which famously declared, “There are no more closets.”
Boys in the Sand gained mainstream attention before Deep Throat and helped usher in the brief era of theatrical porn. Its title parodied Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band, signaling a shift from coded shame to sunlit sexual confidence.
