So this was an interesting process. The link to the post with the script is here, in case you want to follow along.
I’ve never really thumb-nailed a comic before, so this was a new experience for me. I found that I really had to concentrate on doing this. It wasn’t particularly hard exactly, but it required my whole concentration.
The parts I found difficult were mainly in determining the scale of panels. I mostly used a nine panel grid, which I tend to really like in comics, and fit the number of panels I’d scripted pretty well.
In the first page, I had to add two panels, a shot of the sky and then a shot of the kid in profile. This stretches out a moment, which I like, but they’re mainly there to make the panels fit.
I added a panel to page 2 as well, though I like that one better. I extend the moment of approach, when the ghost is walking towards the camera. I wanted to increase menace, and it fit the nine panel grid, so that all worked out nice and tidy.
The only other change from the script was that I welded the shots in page three when the kid is coming out of the bodega together. I wanted extra space to give that one, and I didn’t really feel it needed the two separate beats.
Overall, this was an interesting experience, but a challenging one... which is what I’m looking for in this project, so go me!
Tomorrow I’m probably going to lay out my entity list. Now that I have it laid out, I can go through each panel and list the stuff I’m going to need to build in 3D. There’s... more than I thought, mainly in terms of buildings in the first page. I’m going to need to build at least three houses in some detail...
Anywho! See you tomorrow!
