Walking Dead Season 8 (2017) This season it’s all out war! The group are out to finish Negan and the saviours! So that’s about all you need to know with this one, season 8 has a simple premise and some how manages to over complicate it. This season has arguably what should have been one of the biggest moments in all of the series and manages to make it pretty average. Probably due to the fact it wasn’t supposed to happen and is born out of a contract dispute. But yeah this season has too many character inconsistencies in their personalities, their traits are messed up, they give way too much time to underwhelming and uninteresting plot lines, the politics goes on too long and a lot of characters feel annoying and in the way. The walking dead is supposed to be about the dead, and again this season I just felt the huge gap in zombie threat, it’s become second fiddle again and the concentration is pretty much all on the humans. Will we ever go back to the zombie threat, who knows?! There’s no real stand out performance this season and it all really blends into a filler season in honesty. I don’t think it’s the worst season of anything you’ll ever watch, but it’s not up to standard of the walking dead. Even the finale is one that will completely divide opinion. Some will love it, some will hate it! Overall, I found season 8 too political, too long winded and too much. The Walking Dead Season 7 (2016) Rick and the group have met their greatest adversary yet, and must change to adapt into their new world. Will the group thrive in their newfound world or will they find a way to overcome it? Season 7 is a mixed bag. On one hand it can be incredible. It contains some fantastic suspense, some heart wrenching encounters, some explosive battles and can be a real enjoyment to watch. On the other hand it has become a very politically charged season which can really drag at times and feels like it loses its way slightly. Let’s start by remembering one thing. The walking dead is about zombies, a zombie apocalypse. Whilst this still has its fair share of zombie sequences, it fails to present them as a threat anymore, they’re merely a pawn in the game of humans vying to survive against each other. Where we could have seen greater mutations of the virus, more about what happened, more about the world of zombies, we’ve been placed into an almost soap opera type environment. Not to say that some of it isn’t good watching, which is why I still think it’s good at an 8, but it’s a borderline 8. The acting of Neegan from JDM is the best in here, who constantly manages to confuse the psyche of the audience and cast as to who’s the bad guy and who he really is and it’s interesting. Everyone else plays their roles well as usual and we meet new characters but they’re mainly caught up in the filler. I love the soundtrack and that goes without saying, Bear McCreary is still present which is good and really brings some of the series most poignant moments to their peak in some pretty stark moments. Overall, season 7 is a good season no doubt, it just starts to feel a bit less walking dead. The Walking Dead Season 6 (2015) To protect their new home, Rick and the group must go to great means to make it happen. The group will encounter some of the hardest times they’ve had to go through and pull together to succeed! Season 6 is an absolutely crazy season from episode one to 16. There’s so much to digest, and after last seasons wood crawling the story settles down a bit to start progressing in new directions. It’s a real change in tact and it works, it balances the threat of Zombies and humans better and there’s some jaw dropping moments. There’s some great character developments again and we see them changing more in this season than before. There’s some characters that do fall to the back of the pecking order a bit who get little time to shine, but characters like Morgan give a fresh new perspective on the world and there’s a great representation of new characters. There’s some great performances in this season, I love the rise of Abraham, the cool of Morgan, the change of Carol and Jesus... just Jesus! This is a rollercoaster ride of a season and teaches us how strong the group can be, but also how fragile, and combined with the main man Bear McCreary’s excellent score it brings the whole thing to life and leaves us on one of the greatest cliffhangers to stew on! Overall, season 6 ramps up the pace and takes us on an unbelievable ride. This is the season that drives a spike in the ground and wants to be noticed. The Walking Dead: Season 5 (2014) The group are up against it and in a dire position. They must overcome yet another situation to survive the threat that remains both alive and dead. Traversing the wild lands in order to find new people, and new ways to survive. Season 5 opens with an almighty bang, and sets the tone for the rest of the season. That tone is that it means business. Some of the scenes in season 5 are fantastic, there’s a lot that goes on and the story moves along at a good pace. Season 5 for me feels like a turning point in the series. There’s new additions, losses and what feels like a new set up in the series. Arcs feel a little more meaningful, there’s a deeper and more in tune feel to the group and characters start to go back to doing what they do best. The series has a few moments that make you stand up and take note. This season has a lot of them in it, obviously I can’t say too much because of spoilers but there are a lot of character defining moments here that progress the story and influence members of the group. The cast are still doing a great job, some take a slight back seat in this season, and we start to see a stronger presence from Michonne and Daryl, to help lead the group. This is my obligatory shout out to McCreary because there’s some incredibly emotional stuff in here and he never fails to bring it all to life! Overall, season 5 is one of the better seasons in a while and is jam packed full of content. The Walking Dead: Season 4 (2014) The world has changed immensely, but the group try to hold on to traditional values and maintain a world they knew. All of that is about to change with the return of a familiar face. Season 4 is a real mixed season. On one hand it can be amazing, with some high octane battle sequences, horrific gore, and some of the deepest and darkest emotional decisions that the group have ever had to make. However on the flip side of being great it can also be at its worst with some tedious and drawn out filler that could have easily been cut or combined into episodes to make a shorter season. It gives some new characters a time to shine, but makes long winded work of it. Season 4 sees a development in many characters, in ways that you probably wouldn’t expect, some maintain their personality and others seem to lose theirs. I get some of the changes for the development of the story, however some feel a little forced. Again, Mr McCreary does a fantastic job on the score, needless to say. The country ballads are maybe a little overkill on this and we are almost watching a Beth Greene concert promotion at times. Overall, for consistency Season 4 doesn’t quite reach the heights of its previous seasons. It’s still a solid season though, and when it’s at its best it produces some truly remarkable scenes. The Walking Dead Season 3 (2012) The group stumble across a nearby prison and take refuge there in order to survive. Whilst living there, they discover there’s more to surviving this world than initially meets the eye. Season 3 is good because of its levels, it delves into a deeper emotional and character focused storyline, but still keeps the raw elements of brutality and gore, with death lurking around every corner. This season also sees a lot more characters have a chance to stand out. Most of the group have changed at this point personally and are starting to adjust, or fail, to this new world. Most notably, Rick is the figurehead for this season, coming up against various new challenges, season 3 forces the leader into more than one hard spot. The vast array of characters makes things interesting, it completely opens up the world, it doesn’t become confusing, but some are pretty needless and are there to reinforce the psyche of different members rather than any real value. There are a few scenes that have a deep effect and really push the boat out, you’ll find yourself on more then one occasion on the edge of your seat with some surprise appearances that you wouldn’t expect, and Bear McCreary’s score holds it all together as usual! Overall, season 3 is a season that takes the fun and games out of the series and says it’s go time. The new adversaries are a welcome addition and the balance of walkers works well. Walking Dead Season 2 (2011) After season 1, the group fight to survive by looking out for one another. Stumbling across a new group of survivors they must work together to make new light of an old world. After season 1’s mere 6 episodes comes a nice serving of 13 in season 2. This, draws on a lot more character interaction and development. The world isn’t the same now and neither are the characters. We see the likes of Shane, Daryl and Glen develop more and as a group, personalities start to shine and hence clash. The setting can get a bit samey, as you’ll see with the story remaining stale for a while, however I see why it is the way it is, and it later becomes clear too. Moral dilemmas arise more and politics are more prevalent in this season, however the zombie threat is still there, the gore and violence with it. Bear McCreary is back and doing a stellar job as usual on the score, I don’t really need to say much on that subject as his work speaks for itself, but boy some scenes really hit home with his music accompanying them throughout. Season 2 does a really good job on building on the foundations of number 1, if you enjoyed season 1, 2 will expand your world and pull you deeper into the world of the group. It’s atmospheric, relatable and introduces enough new characters to keep the season interesting without drowning you in new arcs to take in. You’ll be split on some decisions and fall in and out of love with characters throughout in what is a pretty rollercoaster storyline!
