Walking to School is Healthy, Fun and Good for the Planet
Walking to school is a fun, easy way to add exercise to the day, but it’s important to stay safe on your way there. Here are some safety tips to follow:
Parents, plan a safe route with your children before the first day of school. Practice it a few times with your children so they feel comfortable with the route.
Don’t take shortcuts, stay on the main walkways.
Young children should always walk with an adult.
Older students should walk with a friend or a group of friends.
Don’t push, shove, or chase each other when near the street.
Don’t take rides from people if it wasn’t arranged by a parent.
Wear bright-colored clothes.
Watch for cars at every driveway and intersection.
Crossing the street
With cars turning the corner to drivers not paying close attention, it can be hard for children to cross the street. Keep these rules in mind:
Stop and the curb or edge of the street.
Look left, right, left, behind you and in front of you for traffic. Don’t cross until the coast is clear.
Keep your eyes open for traffic until you are safely across the street.
Why Walk to School?
Walking to school gives students—and parents if they join in—a regularly scheduled exercise period and can help create healthy habits.
Walking to school instead of getting there in the family car reduces air pollution and can teach kids about the environment.
As more people walk, communities, schools and drivers become more aware of safe practices and often notice where safety needs to be improved—and making those changes benefits everyone.
Families save gas money, communities save wear and tear on roads, and schools might eventually be able to spend less on transportation.
As a teenager, you probably get to spend more time alone with friends, sometimes in unfamiliar situations and new neighborhoods. But if you forget about your safety, your fun can quickly turn into danger. Me:Can I walk to school?
Mom:NO!What if someone kidnaps you on the way???
Me:It's only 5 minutes away.
Mom:I'll tell you what's 5 minutes. It takes 1 minute for someone to get out of the car next to you, 1 minute to get to you, one minute to shove you into a bag, 1 minute to throw you into their car. And 2 minutes to get to their base and slaughter you.
Me:...Tf
