Have I become Americanized?
So last week I was very proud of myself. One day I managed to get out of the house (even though it is really cold, brrr!) and I got on the bus with Nora in the stroller (for the very first time) and we went to østerbrogade to buy a birthday present for Asger. I walked around my old neighborhood and looked at all the stores and I found a store I wanted to go into. But then when I tried to go in with the stroller I was told I had to leave the stroller outside.. the shop was too small..
Thats right folks.. everything is smaller in Denmark, everything! Cars, car lanes, people, food portions, coffee shops, grocery stores, I tell you, everything. And apparently this store was too small for me and Nora in the stroller, hahaha. If I wanted to go I had to take Nora out of the stroller (too much trouble... I am used to convenience people!), leave the stroller outside (.....I don't think so...), carry the diaper bag (yawn.....) and the stuff I already bought (zzzz...), but then once I got inside I would have no arms left to shop with! Whats the point?
I actually gave it a try, but it just didn't work and I had to leave the shop within a few minutes, haha. I walked back to the bus stop and took the bus home. When Peter got home from work, I told him, very proudly, that we had taken the bus to østerbrogade today and he just looked at me as if I was crazy and said 'You took the BUS to østerbrogade? Why didn't you just walk?' Apparently I forgot that you can walk everywhere in Copenhagen and I am so used to always taking the car if I wanna go anywhere, so walking for me, was just not an option. I haven't walked or biked like that, you know, big city life style, for more than 3 years.. I forgot how to do it. It is a whole different lifestyle and another way of thinking.
Then yesterday we had our friends Silas and Klar and their sweet daughter Selma over for brunch and I told them about my little østerbrogade adventure and they just laughed at me. "You took the BUS to østerbrogade'?hahahaha! So today, Nora and I WALKED to østerbrogade and it only took 15 minutes :-)
I also have to get used to that whole 'leave the kid and stroller outside the store' while I go inside to buy something. Like I said, stores are pretty small so oftentimes there is no room for a stroller and today I went to buy some plants and I had to leave Nora outside :-( But it was very stressful because I was trying to look for the plants I wanted while looking after Nora, making sure no one took her! I am so paranoid, I think everyone wants to steal her, hahaha! I guess I have to get used to this new way of living, walking or biking everywhere, leaving the stroller outside and trust that people won't steal my kids, haha!
Happy Monday y'all!
