Testimony Tuesday: Bethany
My testimony is not a dramatic story of a moment that changed my life. It is just a story of how a little girl grew up and how her faith grew up with her. And that type of story is ok too.
I got saved when I was four. I was the girl from the Christian family going to church every Sunday morning, Covenant Kids every Sunday night, Bible study on Monday, and small group on Wednesday. My family was the family that ate a home-cooked meal together at the dining room table every night (thanks mom). My brother and I got along and we hardly ever fought. I was in soccer and swimming and choir. We were super involved in our church and we visited the rest of my family all the time. I had everything and I took it a little bit for granted. Why did I need God when everything was going so well?
In middle school, I was not super secure typical middle school am I right? I put my identity in my friends. I depended on them to make me worth something. As a result, I spent lots of time doing what they did and wearing what they did and acting like they did. Cue to my uniform of skinny jeans, Aeropostale shirts, a grey hoodie, and converse tennis shoes. Also cue to cheating on tests to look like I wasn’t that smart and gossiping about good people to look good to my not-so-good ones. I actually complained about people that talked about God all the time because “it’s not even that big of a deal.” Then I got involved in youth group and I had college student mentors that changed my perspective on that subject. I realized I needed faith to mean more in my life, but I didn’t know how to change until about my 8th grade year when I went to Fields of Faith (fellowship of christian athletes event) where they talked about surrendering to Christ. I did. I realized I had to be a Christian all the time, not just on Sundays.
Then High School hits. I had a great first year. I started to have a more personal relationship with Christ, but it wasn’t constant and I wasn’t steadfast. I still depended on friends too much. Between my freshman and sophomore year, my family decided to adopt. Joshua David entered our family. I will not attempt to describe the ways that this event was hard or all the ways it changed my family dynamic. I had the hardest time out of everyone in the family connecting with my little brother, which was unexpected for me and my parents. Let’s just say it changed my perspective on everything ever and taught me how to love unconditionally. I am close with him now by the way. Closer than I’d ever imagined we could be. I also went through a really hard time with my best friend since 3 years old as she had the worst year of her life, which challenged my faith and our friendship. It also opened my eyes to a lot of things involving depression, suicide, self-harm and homosexuality, which has enabled me to relate to others that have been through those type of things.
My senior year was the biggest time of growth for me in my faith. I mentored the younger swim girls as their captain and I had the opportunity to lead a bible study of younger high school girls. They taught me how to pray. I loved them so much I couldn’t avoid praying for them. They also taught me how to study scripture, how to speak about God all of the time, and how to encourage other people’s walks. I was also challenged in my faith during my classes as we had a debate about religion. I was forced, for the first time, to defend my faith in the face hostility. I also had to learn the meaning of the phrase “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” And then I got to join this blog. And it is awesome.
My story is far from over, but I can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for me next as I move away from home for the first time to start college!
