This would be the last she saw of them, that much she knew and it felt as if the atmosphere of the room reflected her pessimistic thoughts. They both knew her chances of surviving once she left — but he could no longer care for her, for he was much more injured from this horrid war than she.

She didn’t want to leave but she knew she must. As saddening as it was, she knew she would die under him if she stayed any longer, yet it felt like it was him abandoning her rather than the other way around, the reality of the situation just did not feel real.

She knew she couldn’t dwell any longer on the situation and turned to leave, but on impulse she turned back to him, not noticing the look of surprise on his face from her actions before she ran up to him and wrapped her arms around him in a last…quite desperate hug.

She could feel him mirroring her movements, bringing her closer to her with his own arms. She didn’t speak, as she could feel the tears coming but held them back. It would be quite improper for her to cry, even now of all times, so instead she buried her face in his chest to stop them from flowing.

Too soon she pulled away, a few tears having escaped her eyes. Managing a small smile she finally spoke, her voice miraculously staying level. “I — we’ll see each other again — right Vati —?”
