The Wilderness [FoF fic]
Wan'er & Zhu Yan & Wen Xiao pre-demon-hunting-bereau days in the Wilderness
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Being a parent is tough. Being a demon-parent in the Wilderness is nearly unimaginable, but that's exactly what Zhu Yan has gotten himself into with one bossy Goddess and one little Goddess-in-the-making. A slice of life Wilderness fic because I imagine Wen Xiao was growing up quite a wildling in her teens (and that has affected her character to be slightly more unhinged than she's letting everyone know :D)

Part 2 of 3
I’m about halfway through Joy of Life S1 (for Xiao Zhan, although he’s not in it until the last several eps), and I'm getting really confused and annoyed by something. Maybe someone can clarify? Maybe I'm missing something culturally significant .... (Spoilers behind the cut,)
So the protagonist, Fan Xian, likes this girl, Wan’er, who is the illegitimate daughter of the King’s sister and the prime minister. But her half-brother, Lin Gong, didn’t want her marrying a loser from the countryside, feeling she’s gotten short-shrifted all her life because of being illegitimate, and so sicced this Northern Qi warrior on Fan Xian, to assassinate him (very likely at the behest of the Crown Prince, who would benefit from Fan Xian’s death); Fan Xian’s friend / bodyguard was killed. Fan Xian was furious, and so investigated who sent the killer. He figured out that this woman, Si Lili, a spy for the kingdom of Northern Qi, was involved, captured her, and questioned her until he got the name of Lin Gong from her. He decided to kill Lin Gong, but his old mentor knocked him out, because he sensed that Fan Xian was feeling halfhearted about it (because of Lin Gong being Wan’er’s beloved brother), then went and killed Lin Gong himself.
Several people all wanted to know if Fan Xian had gotten Lin Gong’s name from Si Lili; if he had, they figure that means he was indeed the one who killed Lin Gong, and they wanted him dead in turn -- especially Lin Gong’s friend, the Crown Prince.
Here’s what I don't get: they all know Lin Gong was a traitor, him having worked with Northern Qi (something that implicates the Crown Prince in turn, really), and that Lin Gong tried to assassinate Fan Xian (twice!!) ... so why would they think Fan Xian should die if he in turn killed the traitor who tried to kill him first and DID kill his friend? Shouldn't that mean he would have thrice the reasons and the right to retaliate against Lin Gong?? It makes zero sense to me. Why are they acting like a traitor's death is some tragedy that must be avenged, and like his treachery is no big deal, but this guy who was attacked, his friend murdered, must be a truly horrid person for avenging his friend and himself?
Also, Wan’er had planned to kill herself if it turned out that Fan Xian had killed her beloved brother, and it’s like, if the fact that the man you loved murdered the brother you loved made you suicidal, shouldn't you also be suicidal because your brother tried to kill the man you loved? Doesn’t the man you love have a right to defend himself against multiple assassinations?? *scratches head*
Wan'er: I hope you don’t do anything foolish.
Zetian: I hope you’re not hoping too hard.
Taiping: Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what youre gonna get.
Wan'er: You’re going to get chocolate.
Taiping: No, babe, that’s not-
Wan'er: You’re gonna get cHOCOLATES.
Wan'er: i don't care what anyone says, the cookie part is the best part of an oreo.
Di Renjie: dark without light is an abyss, light without darkness is blinding. you cannot have a coin with only one side.
Taiping: yo, socrates, it's just a freaking cookie.
