John regarded the young woman and had to smirk a little at her initial response. ‘Darling’ was just one of the many terms he tossed out when he was talking to birds. He had several of them. Blokes usually just got ‘mate’ unless he decided on something more intimate, but that didn’t happen often.
“No offense meant, luv,” he said holding up a hand. “Just how I talk.”
He lit a cigarette as she spoke then offered another smile. “This isn’t my usual opening line, no,” he said. “I’ve seen you in the smoke so I know who you are and I know what you can do.” He covered the flame on his lighter with his hand then turned his hand over showing that the flame was now in his hand. “I thought you might be interested in meeting more people like us.”
Gently he blew on the flame in his hand and it went out with a large puff of smoke. His hand now held his business card with two fingers and he held it out to her. “My card,” he said. “A conversation about possible and impossible will be a long one. Best to have it in a place with friendlier ears.”
