have you watched Bride of the Century? I just finished it and I loved it. It was definitely unique.

Yes, I have! It was cute enough and hit all the standard tropes of a rom-com to satisfy me, although I thought it got a little lost in melodramatic wallowing in the middle, and the noble idiocy at the end made me roll my eyes a bit.

But definitely a satisfying rom-com in the classic kdrama sense.

I’m seriously impressed that you are still watching this. Serious props to you. I physically could not.

It's a sickness. I know I should stop, but I can't. I don't want to care... but I do.

Mostly, I think, because they started out promoting it as a fan-project, and I was excited (and super wary, but still kinda excited) at the thought of international fans caring so much about a classic Asian tv show (and manga) that they'd want to try and make their own. I love the idea of someone attempting to creatively remake a cult classic in a different way, and I'm sentimentally attached to Hana Yori Dango, and I have a lot respect for fanmade projects...

...except now it's just about the behind-the-scenes drama that really keep me watching, because I get curious to see how they're gonna handle the changes. (Not well, I presume.)

The thing is, I have a ton of ideas (now... thanks to BBF, because I'd never bothered to think about it before) about how you could try to introduce a low-budget Americanized HYD that might actually be fun and decent enough, and this show does none of that. None of it. Every subsequent episode makes me question their fandom to HYD, which makes me more pissed off because it's like... have they read the manga? Watched all the versions? Are they even trying?

It's like...

(Ok, bear with me with me on this metaphor -- it just popped into my head and I'm going to run with it.)

...50 Shades of Gray.

Hana Yori Dango isn't exactly the greatest manga ever, and the tv shows aren't exactly the best jdorama/kdrama I've ever scene. But they're super popular and some of the most well-known, and they've made a serious mark on the Asian market. Boys Over Flowers is definitely a huge factor in getting international fans hooked on kdramas (at least in my very unscientific polling, aka chatting with people about kdramas and saying, "oh, hey, that was my first kdrama, too!").

So the original Hana Yori Dango is like Twilight. Not that great critically, but super popular.

And then Boys Before Friends is like the most terrible fanfiction you can imagine of HYD. It's an affront to fanfiction. Fans don't even want the word 'fan' to be attached to it. Grad students (and snooty rich kids?) are horrified and offended at the childish way they are being portrayed, but that's what the author thinks is real and what the people want.

Which is where 50 Shades of Grey comes in -- it's terrible fanfiction of not-so-great yet-popular novels, and does a disservice to the craft of fanfiction (and I'm told it gives a completely wrong depiction of the bdsm scene, not to mention being horrifically misogynistic and just, ugh, awful all around). But unlike BBF, 50 Shades of Grey became ridiculously popular.

BBF is only going to be popular as a blip on the drama-fanatics timeline as a "hey, you remember that time those Americans tried to remake HYD and failed miserably, and all the resulting drama that surrounded it? Yeah, that was crazy and weird, wasn't it?"

I guess I'm just upset because even though I never had high hopes for this, it could have been so much more than it is. And I'm such an idealistic that I still have the little kernal of hope they'd manage to turn things around -- except that's pretty much gone by now, and I'm really only watching it like the trainwreck that it is. Because, let's face it -- recasting the leads isn't exactly going to turn this drama around.

Which still doesn't really answer why I'm continuing to watch it. I wish I knew. So I could figure out a way to quit. *sobs*

1) Most embarrassing moment of 2013?

I saw Lee Minho IRL, then I got sat on by a girl who was also trying to get a good pic of him. My cousin still has that vid. 

2) A 2013 drama with the best OST? I barely watched any dramas in 2013 at all, so I’m gonna have to say Heirs because it’s a drama that I did watch that I liked more than one song on the OST 3) Your OTP of 2013? Lee Junki and Park Ha Sun. Haven’t seen how they act like together off screen but I think they look good together and probably should date IRL.

Ok, I think I’ve made my point.

4) Which k-actor/k-actress would u like to meet irl?

Well, I haven’t officially met Oppa IRL, so I’ll go with LMH

6) Most under-rated k-drama in 2013? Two Weeks. It was a really good drama and yes people talked about it and watched it and stuff but it didn’t really compare to like the buzz of Master’s Sun.

7) Which actor are you dying to see get discharged from army? Lee Junhyuk!!!!! I was quite sad when he left. Come Back Mr. Prosecutor!!!!!
