To me, the message of James in his letter is to be against wantonness/selfishness.
We are to not just listen to the word of compassion, but we are to go and be doers of the word (Chapter 1). Show no partiality to the rich, but extend your hand to the poor, the oppressed. Show it in your works. If any ask, give to them; don't just tell them "I hope for the best for you" (Chapter 2). Use our words to bless, not curse our neighbors. Show equality and kindness in your deeds, not selfishness and contempt (Chapter 3). Do not be overcome by selfishness at the expense of others, nor boastful about what you do not know (Chapter 4). Do not be overcome with the greed of the rich, whose glory is moth eaten. Be patient in the times of suffering, for peace will come. When praying for things, be faithful in it (Chapter 5).
