Door Gunner: Git some! Git some! Git some, yeah, yeah, yeah! Anyone who runs, is a VC. Anyone who stands still, is a well-disciplined VC! You guys oughta do a story about me sometime! Private Joker: Why should we do a story about you? Door Gunner: 'Cuz I'm so fuckin' good! I done got me 157 dead gooks killed. Plus 50 water buffalo, too! Them's all confirmed! Private Joker: Any women or children? Door Gunner: Sometimes! Private Joker: How can you shoot women or children? Door Gunner: Easy! Ya just don't lead 'em so much! Ain't war hell?

Once that first bullet goes past your head, politics and all that **** just goes right out the window. -Sgt "Hoot"
Y'know what I think? Don't really matter what I think. Once that first bullet goes past your head, politics and all that **** just goes right out the window. -Sgt "Hoot"
I wonder how much of that is true.
I think modern shooting games has perfectly simulated the modern stereotype of modern warfare--it's about "fun."
It's surreal to see names being carved into the local memorial at the park right next to the sand pit and the swings. That memorial used to be merely flags until they ran out of room on the grass. Marble pillars were constructed to fit it all now.
Yet still, there're the explosions, the camaraderie, the heroism, the violence, and the killing toys. It's exciting and adventurous, who wouldn't want to be a part of that fraternity?
But my favorite part of shooting games is the loading screen. It pauses the game to think about the politics and "all that shit" like they actually matter. It reminds the player of the cause.
Why am I shooting Nazis again? Oh right, because Churchill told me to.
I'm reminded of the digital civilian lives I'm protecting and the digital enemy lives I'm about to take. I'm reminded of the marble pillars. Who I aim at matters. Where my bullets travel matters.
But when the first bullet goes past your head, politics and all that shit just goes right out the window.
