Be Thankful: we're blessed. My Ward 9 experience. Last Words.
Ang daming nangyari for 3 days. Haha! Now I'll make this short. Very short. Haha!
What I just want to say is, let's all be thankful that we're blessed with such a wonderful life and don't experience what this people (referring to patients inside Ward 9) are experiencing.
'Di to simpleng sakit sa tiyan o ngipin lang, let's take note sakit to sa utak.
Ok?
Just a piece of advice and kind of my realizations.
Be Thankful: we're blessed. My Ward 9 experience. Part 3
2nd post then last day. I'm sad I have to talk about my last day in Ward 9. For two days, feel ko close na kame ng lahat ng pasyente dun. Kitang-kita mo kasi talaga ang progress in each of them at yung gaano sila nagiging close sa mga student nurses as days go by.
Nung first day, they were looking at us like parang gusto nila kameng kainin at lunukin ng buhay (no exaggeration). Di sila masyado ngsasmile and ngkekwento. Pero on the afternoon of the first day, they can already talk to us, laugh with us, poor eye contact and are responsive.
On the second day, close na kame! Haha! Feel ko lang. De, sila na kasi tumatawag saamin. Then kumakaway, ngkekwento, nga-eye contact na rin and ngsa-smile.
And lastly, on the third day. They were already participative, as in they give full cooperation, smiling, laughing, talking with others (but not all), and dancing and singing. We conducted a socialization therapy kasi. We had exercise, games and snacks. Super enjoy! Really! Promise! :D
But I kept it. I said I will never cry infront of people. Lalo na pag ang dahilan is naaawa ako.
But Wait! Guess what?
BUMISITA SI SIR JEROME DUN! AS IN ANG SAYA SAYA SAYA KO THAT TIME! SOBRA!
Grabe! (Uh! Tears are falling while I'm typing this.) Aww. Ok. Moving on!
Ang daming nangyari this day and I will never forget this. I will forever and ever remember this and will forever keep it in my heart and mind til the day I die.
Last words on the next post.
Be Thankful: we're blessed. My Ward 9 experience. Part 2
1st post. And then. On the next day, I was so down! I was really so down! Paano naman kasi, na-discharge na siya! Imagine? Gusto ko na talaga umiyak that time and I was really asking where he stays sa teacher namin kasi I was so worried about him.
Ang OA ko. Oo alam ko. Kahit one day palang kame ngkasama pero feel ko matagal na kame mgkakilala and he became my inspiration kasi.
But eventually, I accepted the fact na di na tlaga kame mgkikita at di ko na maibigay ang Milo at cheesebread sakanya. I was happy for him din kasi ok na siya, his in touch with reality and is now living with his sister's family. More about him on the next post.
Then during that day, we conducted an occupational therapy program for the patients. Inassist namin silang gumawa ng doormat as an occupational therapy. Sad to say, continuation of such activity is not provided after our shift. I mean, pagkatapos ng mga student nurses mg-duty dun, 'di na ngcoconduct ng mga program or therapies like we prepare ang mga staff dun. Eh paano naman kasi, nurse-patient ratio is such a big problem in a public hospital, ika nga ni Mr. Jerome.
At yun ang pangit, there is no continuity of care. Therefore, less chance na gumaling sila dun agad. (Ay Sensya. Nilalabas ko lang hinanaing ko. Hha!)
You can't expect sweet smells and good odor there, if you know what I'm talking about. Para makatulong lang sa kanila, I will do and risk anything. Charla! Pero totoo.
And by the way, on this day since nadischarge na 1st patient ko, I was assigned to another patient. Mr.Jeffrey, 23 years old, catatonic. And you cn't just imagine kung gaano ako nahirapan sakanya. Buhat sa side na ito tapos buhat para makaupo then assist sa walking and all. Feel ko, machong-macho na ako neto. Haha! Then administer medications with assistance, painom ng tubig and all nursing care. At ang saya ko, nakatulong ako! Well. Haha! :D
*STOP!* Third day experience will be posted next.
Be Thankful: we're blessed. My Ward 9 experience.
Ang sakit ng ulo ko hanggang ngayon. Paano naman kasi umiyak ako sa last day ng last rotation ng duty namin for this sem. Yung totoo? Yes, eto yung totoo. Ewan ko. Di ko kasi napigilan 'di umiyak.
Side Note: This post and my next posts will be all about my 3 days experience at Ward 9, Department of Psychiatry.
Ok. For my 5th rotation, we were assigned in Ward 9 ZCMC for 3 days. Nung una, I was so anxious and so scared of what will happen and how to deal with the patients. Honestly, natatakot talaga ako kasi baka suntukin ba kame bigla or ma-harass or ibaboy. Ah basta! Haha! Pero the moment we stepped inside the ward, nawala lahat ng perceptions ko sa mga psycho, the people who are mentally ill. Wait. Let's call them this way kasi napaka-harsh naman kung tawagin silang loko, buang o any term you call them. They are still human beings ok? So anyway,
Yun nga. First, I was assigned to Mr.Jerome, 53 years old, a nurse by profession and let me add, sobrang talino. Of course, increase anxiety level agad ako kasi baka tanungin ako ng kung ano-ano but then I was wrong. Ang sarap niyang kausap. Pinag-usapan na ata namin lahat. About nursing, his life, other's life, mga effects ng medication, about human body etc. Wow!
Panay thank you din siya. Nalaman din kasi niyang 'di mataas sugar level niya. Grabe ang dami kong realizations sa life by that time and I was like trying to stop my tears to fall. Taena! Bien emotional ba talaga ako. Moving on. When we got home, I decided to buy Milo, cheese and cheesebread (his favorites) para mabigay ko on the next day. And then.
*STOP!* Second day experience will be posted next.
Final (?) Ward Maps
The Redistricting Group posted their final draft for City Ward Maps. It is expected that the Minneapolis Charter Commission will pass the maps without further changes.
As noted earlier, this final draft leaves all of Midtown Phillips in the 9th Ward. The ward's demographics will change as less of Longfellow is in the ward, all of Powderhorn, and most of Central get added. Four full neighborhoods will lie within the 9th ward - Midtown, East Phillips, Corcoran, and Powderhorn.

Ward Maps Almost Finalized - More Major Changes
It is hard to keep up with the fast and furious changes to the Redistricting Maps. According to the Star Tribune, the Redistricting Group passed a final version of the maps to the Charter Commission. As of right now, neither the Star Tribune or the city's redistricting web site has a copy of the maps.
However, the March 22 and March 23 maps divided Midtown Phillips into the 6th Ward and the 9th Ward along 12th Ave S.
March 23 Ward 6 & 9 Maps:
After some emotional testimony (according to the Star Tribune) the Group kept all of Midtown Phillips in the 9th Ward.
Here is a quote from the Star Tribune:
Much of the opposition focused on the map's shifting part of largely Latino Midtown Phillips from the Ninth Ward to the Sixth.
Redistricting officials had sought to redraw the Sixth Ward, which currently spans Whittier, Phillips West, Ventura Village and Stevens Square/Loring Heights, to give East African immigrants a better election opportunity.
But the effort was controversial.
Latinos from the Ninth Ward wanted to keep all of Midtown Phillips. And Indians complained that the changes to accommodate East Africans were dividing them, especially given that the larger East African group is motivated to put one of their own on the council. Council Member Robert Lilligren, who is an Indian, currently represents the Sixth Ward.
"We have absolutely nothing against the Somali people or black people; we just don't like you to put us together ... and turn us against each other," said Clyde Bellecourt, executive director of the American Indian Movement Interpretive Center.
He said they would not wait around for another 10 years -- when the next redistricting will occur -- for "a bunch of pale faces" to make decisions. When Clegg interjected that Bellecourt's time was up, he retorted, "My time is never up. Your time is up." The audience applauded.
A security guard was summoned, though she took no action against Bellecourt.
Once the final map is posted I'll add a new post.

Redistricting Update: Maps Changed Again
Back on February 22 we reported on the proposed redistricting maps for City Council Wards. Well, the most recent proposal creates some radical changes that have upset some of our neighborhing communities. Seward, Longfellow, and Cedar Riverside have had some interesting converstaions on their respective e-democracy forums, yet Phillips has been eerily silent.
It is possible that the silence in Phillips is because only Midtown Phillips will be directly impacted by the change - the other 3 neighborhoods will remain with their current ward. Though the wards will be dramatically different.
Here is a look at the 6th and 9th wards on the March 6 proposal:
You might recall that the East African community would like to have a ward designed to consolidate their primary population with the hopes of electing an East African City Councilmember. This map appears to do this. However, this does beg the question about other traditionally underrepreseted groups that live in the Phillips community. It seems that if the 4 Phillips neighborhoods were represented by the same councilmember there would be a good chance of having a Latino, Native American, African-American, and even an East African councilmember.
The current map reeks of gerrymeandering, especially as the changes to Ward 6 & 2 are concerned.
It isn't clear on the redistricting website what the next steps are. However you can find a list of the redistricting members here. The City of Minneapolis' calendar lists public hearings on March 15, 19, and 21st for public hearings.
