In 1982 as Basquiat began grappling with his place in the art world, he was invited to have his lunch with gallerist and art collector Bruno Bischofberger. Bischofberger wanted to take a picture of Basquiat and Warhol at the factory (Warhol's studio). Though Basquiat would hang around the factory selling postcards he had made outside - prior to this the pair had not been formally introduced. Basquiat didn’t stay for lunch but rather went home and within a couple of hours sent Warhol a painting - still wet - of the picture of the emerging artist and his long time idol. Warhol told his assistant Pat Hackett he was initially irritated by Basquiat’s rapid success and recognition but was quite affected by this encounter. Warhol said to Bischofberger himself that afternoon:

‘Oh, I’m so jealous!’

‘Why?’

‘He’s faster than me!'
