Hello, I would like to know if you have any scholarly sources where I can get more information on internalized misogyny. I'm writing a research paper on this issue and I am having a difficult time. Thank you!
hmm, this is a tough one- when this blog started out as a college project, I developed my own definition of internalized misogyny and backed it up with in-class sources that didn't reference it by name. I did a quick google scholar search for "internalized misogyny" and "internalized sexism" and you weren't kidding! the first brought up 275 and the second around 500. some of these look promising, but a lot of them are behind paywalls for me since I'm not in school. it sounds like you're a student, and your school and/or library should have access to a number of online scholarly publications and databases. here's some database lists from my alma mater for gender studies and race and ethnic studies (sociology or social science databases/journals might also be useful!). try searching in some of those databases for internalized misogyny/sexism or other terms like self-objectification, internalized oppression, sexist behavior, internalized homophobia, -heterosexism, -racism, etc.
something I found that was NOT behind a paywall was a 2009 study called "the fabric of internalized sexism" and a 2009 feminist critique of said article. just from the abstracts, they look like they might be useful!
another thing I'd recommend: if you have time, try looking through autobiographies or otherwise autobiographic works by female writers. they will likely have stories or at least little moments that engage with internalized misogyny in some way, and while that's not really helpful for defining it, it can help explain it or prove its place in modern society. off the top of my head, audre lorde, marjane satrapi, alison bechdel, and sandra cisneros have all written a lot of memoirs, so they might be of some help? I also read a great latina memoir for school four-ish years ago but ugh I can't remember the name and I don't think it was by cisneros.
legally blonde (the movie and musical, not the book) has issues ofc, but it is a perfect example of internalized misogyny affecting interactions between women if you need a multimedia example.
as a more general source, I found bell hooks' feminism is for everybody in pdf form!
I hope this is helpful! if any followers have suggested reading, I'm sure @warinmind would appreciate it!
Happy Birthday my dude! Hope you have a marvelous marvelous day (: 🎈
Wow Thank you so much. i will try and make it the best as possible :D
