How I feel about this character

Oh Michael! <3 I love her, I’m fascinated by her, I think there are so many dimensions of her still yet to explore, and also she deserves as many hugs as she wants.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

I don’t have any major ships for Michael, and in fact I haven’t particularly been drawn into shipping the Disco characters together generally (Philippa/Afsaneh doesn’t count because only one of them is actually in the show!) Perhaps that will change with time? I don’t mind her and Ash, and I think there’s a lot of potential to explore there given that they’re both children of two worlds in their ways, both sometimes feeling torn between a culture of origin and a culture that they’ve lived in. (Although for Ash it’s unclear which is which and where the lines are). So yeah, I think there are interesting things to be done there, but I felt like S1 needed another episode or two to establish their chemistry, it felt a little rushed to me.

I’m also not averse to Michael/Tilly but I’m more into it as a friendship.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Oh gosh, so many?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE her and Philippa together. I understand why they didn’t give us seven years on the Shenzhou (even if I don’t 100% agree) but I would have watched that show SO HARD. Michael getting less scared of her emotions, slowly realising that sometimes the human way is pretty effective. Philippa learning to accept that Michael is her own person, and a stubborn one at that, and that sometimes her Vulcan way of doing things really is the right way for her even if Philippa doesn’t totally get it. The gradual way Philippa begins to trust Michael with more and more responsibility... GAH, it could have been so beautiful.

But then I’m also really intrigued by where they’re going to take Michael’s relationship with Emperor Philippa. Like, there are a LOT of layers there to explore, so much baggage on both sides, such interesting tension.

Also I just love Michael and Sylvia, like, I think they’re so good for each other and I’m really glad they found each other. I think Michael really, really needed Sylvia’s hopefulness and goodness at that moment.

Also she and Stamets are the BEST GRUMPY SCIENCE BUDS.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I don’t think I have any! At least not that the sensible corners of fandom that acknowledge her greatness would consider unpopular. (Oh wait you know what this only just barely counts but I don’t really like the Alice books and I wish they’d picked something else, even though I can see why they went with that because it works so well with the overarching themes and motifs.)

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I would like to see more about her relationship with Amanda. Also I think she should get to be at the centre of a fun shenanigans episode. S1 was a really tough time for her and I’d like to see her get the chance to relax a bit.

I’ve accepted the fact that I spend most my free time writing (or staring at the laptop screen wishing I could write) and honestly I don’t know why between ages 15-27 I pretended that it wasn’t worth doing it? I feel so much better now. Like, I don’t even need to post the stuff I write anywhere I just feel better by typing something

I learned to repair most of the hardware of PCs and laptops, given it’s something that doesn’t require soldering (I don’t have the equipment for that). I’m ready to disassemble any computer in the house at the drop of a hat, which is a bit alarming according to my wife, but I really like that I have this skill now

In general, it's just lovely to see everyone celebrating and critiquing and expanding on the canon stories, and to have a chance to read new perspectives from an incredibly varied and diverse group of fellow fans. A more specific perk is that my favorite series is Voyager, and my favorite character is Captain Janeway, and I love all the meta and fanfiction about her character and her arc. Even more specifically, I really enjoy the fact that in late-2010s Tumblr Voyager fandom, many people--from my fellow fic-writing meta-analyzing fandom-dwelling fans to Voyager fans who post one thing in the Janeway tag and are never seen again--refer to Janeway as having clinical depression. The character's depression is fairly explicit (and occasionally mentioned in a non-fandom review or article, too) but never referred to as such on-screen, so it's really nice, as a person with depression, to get to see that part of the story discussed in as many words, and to get to read others' writing about a shared beloved fictional character with the same problem I have.

So I was checking people's blogs hopefully for new content after Actually Doing Homework for a while, as you do, and it's been a long day and there was a kitten post directly after a baby bat post and I swear my brain just S TUTT ERE D for a minute and was like "is bat? cat? is there difference. ? is batcat. bcat !"

Yes, I was spoiler-free referring to that lil cutie (that was my ask #comingclean). I love Ripper so much, and hard same to loving that trope. Michael's interaction with Ripper singlehandedly changed her place in my heart from "character I love" to one of My Characters. (Which I think might be a nomenclature I got from you??? If so, thanks, it's neat to be able to put it into words ;)

Eee, I love that! Yes, I use My Characters to differentiate between characters I love (Leia, Janeway, Roslin, Dutch) and characters I relate to on a spiritual level, that I recognize, that just are mine (Padmé, B’Elanna, Kara, Pawter….and tbh Aneela). And I talk about this so much and so often that friends now point them out to me, which is the best! 

Michael became Mine the moment she quoted Alice in Wonderland, because Alice is like the template for My Characters and yes, the fact she got a pet monster in the next episode cements it.

(First of all, thank you for this blog! It's so thoughtful and kind, and I don't doubt it takes a lot of time & energy to run.) Could I please get some positivity from Janeway about choosing not to use substances? While I'm NOT saying there's enough support even for people who do use, or that they 'have it better,' sometimes it feels like there's nothing at all for someone choosing not to start, even tho it's a continuous decision that takes a lot of will the more I long for that kind of escape.

I can definitely add this to my list for you, darlin!

One of my favorite bits from your writing is a brief part of a story (I can't remember which story it was oops) where we find out [thru an argument they're having after the fact] that Janeway faked her own death after a diplomat tried to assassinate her, and the crew inc. Chakotay thought she was really dead for a day. I'd maliciously love to see a drabble in any way relating to that (or a redo of that scenario, or something similar, or... :)

I totally remember writing that but am having a hard time finding it (must have been a tumblr ficlet I failed to transfer to ao3), but anyway here you go:

“I’m not dead, though.  I’m fine. I’m right here.”

Kathryn wraps around Chakotay’s back, hands coming to rest against his heart, feeling the unevenness of his breath catching with each resisted sob.

“I’m not, though.  I’m not fine, Kathryn.  Do you have any idea how many times I’ve had to face you ‘being dead’?  Any idea how every time I’m pretty sure this is going to be the time I just can’t get up again because you won’t?”

“After what is it… fourteen times, I’d think you’d have more faith in me,” she murmurs into his ear, hands drifting lower.
