Fitz didn’t think that anyone else was still awake on the base. He figured it was just him, pacing the halls by the lab, by the hangar doors, by the bunks. He couldn’t stop the tears that were stinging his eyes, so he had taken to pacing, walking back and forth and back and forth, counting the bricks in the wall, tiles on the floor – anything to keep his mind occupied and off of the nightmares that had been keeping him up all night.
His pacing was methodical, always the same number of steps in one hallway as in another. Fitz had been at it for hours, walking back and forth, shaking hands pulling at his hair, fingers pulling at his lip or his ear.
Turning the corner, about to start the next lap around the research labs, Fitz nearly screamed he was so caught off guard.
“S-sorry,” he mumbled, looking away. “Thought everyone else was asleep.”
