isolde’s not stupid. she knows exactly how her parents feel about warren—which is half the reason why she had invited him as her plus one for the charity event that they’re hosting. the other half of the reason being nothing more than the fact that he’s one of the few people who can get her through these ostentatiously fancy parties that her parents like to throw every so often. as the daughter of the hosts, isolde is expected to arrive before the other guests, but instead the event is already in full-swing when she and warren show up to the entrance in a flurry of laughter, already a few glasses of wine in each.
a man in his forties, dressed in a full tux, stops them before they can enter the ballroom, frowning at them over the bridge of his nose. probably the head planner, then. ‘ i’m sorry, ’ the man says, sounding anything but, ‘ this is a private event. ’ a puzzled look crosses over his face when he catches the way isolde’s lips pull into a grin, and the sight of it only adds to her entertainment. ‘ do you know who you’re talking to ? ’ isolde returns briskly, her voice almost dripping with entitlement—it’s a tone she reserves specially for occasions like this, and she has to fight the urge to break character at the sudden alarm on the man’s face as recognition finally kicks in. ‘ miss isolde ! ’ he exclaims, ‘ my apologies, i thought you were already inside, i didn’t think— ’
she raises a hand then, cutting his apology off mid-sentence. ‘ it’s fine. i won’t say anything to my parents. ’ the man nods, opening one of the heavy double doors for them, and the sheer number of guests makes her even more thankful that warren is there with her. ‘ let’s go say hi to my parents first—don’t make that face, i don’t want to either, but i have to prove that i’m actually here. and besides, it’ll be fun to see the look on their faces when they see you. ’ she grins, then, her expression nothing short of devious. ‘ after we get that over with, we can hit the open bar, how’s that sound ? ’
