.....all'8 settembre ho visto la vigliaccheria di un Governo che non amava l'Italia, ma solo i propri interessi. Tutta l'Italia, esercito compreso fu abbandonato senza ordini. Il Re ed il capo del Governo scappano da Roma e si rifugiano in territorio italiano atto a venire immediatamente occupato dai nemici angloamericani: è una resa senza condizioni. Nel momento di scegliere tra Mussolini ed il Re non ha creduto di venir meno al giuramento nei confronti di quest'ultimo? Il re fuggendo mi aveva liberato dal giuramento di fedeltà. Quando il comandante in capo fugge non si può seguirlo nell'onta e nel disonore. Perché ha scelto di aderire alla Decima Flottiglia Mas? Credeva ancora nella possibilità di una vittoria dell'Asse o la ispiravano altre motivazioni? Al 9 di settembre chiesi all'aiutante della scuola Paracadutisti di essere inviato a Trieste perché ritenevo che in quella zona si sarebbe svolta la vera tragedia italiana. Già da tempo sapevo che la guerra sarebbe stata persa, ma la resa incondizionata non era nei miei intendimenti. Si chiede la resa solo quando si è combattuto sino all'ultima cartuccia o si è morti colpiti dal nemico. ....

..... on 8 September I saw the cowardice of a government that did not love Italy, but only its own interests. All of Italy, including the army, was abandoned without orders. The King and the head of the government flee from Rome and take refuge in Italian territory, ready to be immediately occupied by the Anglo-American enemies: it is an unconditional surrender. In the moment of choosing between Mussolini and the King, did you not believe that you were breaking your oath against the latter? The king fleeing had freed me from the oath of allegiance. When the commander in chief escapes, one cannot follow him in shame and dishonor. Why did you choose to join the 10th Mas Flotilla? Did she still believe in the possibility of an Axis victory or did other reasons inspire her? On 9 September I asked the assistant of the Paratroopers school to be sent to Trieste because I believed that the real Italian tragedy would take place in that area. I had known for some time that the war would be lost, but unconditional surrender was not my intention. Surrender is asked only when you have fought to the last cartridge or have died hit by the enemy. ....
