the thing that’s so great about “on purpose. i love him on purpose” is that it’s So True. a lot of times with friends to lovers tropes there’s a theme around “accidentally” falling in love, as in, slowly but surely growing to love one of your friends until you are full on In Love before you even realize it. in rwrb, alex felt himself falling in love way before either of them admitted it out loud, and he wasn’t in denial either, he KNEW it. henry knew he was in love the entire time. even with that, they had chances to walk away. they felt themselves falling for each other and so many times could have stepped away, decided it was a bad idea, stopped before it was too late. but again, and again, and again, they chose not to stop. they chose each other again, and again, and again. they knew it would have bad consequences, they knew they had chances to prevent it, but they chose each other and to give themselves to someone else so fully, and to love each other entirely. they loved each other on purpose.
i will never be over alex telling henry that his tie is boring and henry saying that royals aren’t supposed to wear patterns because they shouldn’t make Statements and this specific issue isn’t brought up again until the very end of the book when they’re waiting for the election results and henry and alex are finally out and henry shows up in a printed tie in support of alex and the democratic party and showing that he doesn’t care about not making statements anymore that’s good shit right there
daily reminder that if you liked red, white, and royal blue you should check out her royal highness by rachel hawkins! the plot is enemy roommates to lovers and the love interests are a bi texan and a lesbian princess of scotland and it’s adorable wlw goodness
omg i’m thinking about how in tda kit says that every book in the london institute was written all over by some guy named will herondale....and now i’m thinking about will giving no shits about the library’s books and deciding they’re HIS books and he will enscribe them as he pleases...and then i’m thinking about james and lucie reading all these books w their father’s annotations in them...and then i’m thinking about will growing too old and weak to read and write anymore...and then i’m thinking about tessa reading them to feel close to will after he’s gone....and about his legacy living on through books all the way into modern times and how many people have been to the london institute’s library and read those books......🥺
"what do you think my forgiveness looks like, jordie?"
"who the hell is jordie?"
you see, the great thing about emma carstairs as a Feminist Character is how realistic she is. for so long women became used to being painted as “cute, girly, dumb, submissive girl” that when they wrote feminist characters they tried to make them the complete opposite of that picture in every way. they started making their female characters ruthless, harsh, brutal, strong, and everything else they possibly could to show that those weren’t just manly traits, and that women could possess them, too. there’s nothing wrong with that, but it was also becoming a little redundant, and pretty unrealistic for a lot of girls/women to relate to. emma carstairs, on the other hand, yes, has trained and is strong as hell, and is the best shadowhunter of her generation, and is driven by revenge in everything she does for the first 17 years of her life, however, that’s not all she is. we get scenes of emma killing hordes of demons in full battle gear while armed to the sky with weapons, and then the scene shifts and she’s wearing a floral vintage dress from her favorite thrift store. and it doesn’t feel liek a forced transition, it feels natural, it feels like that’s who her character is. she is the perfect shadowhunter warrior in all the ways it counts, but she also keeps her hair way longer than most shadowhunters are prone to, beacuse she likes it that way, and she doesn’t feel the need to change that to prove herself as tough or good enough. emma feels so real because of the ways that she possesses traditionally “masculine” traits as a product of her society, but she also retains her femininity because that’s who she is. she shows that yes, being tough and strong and relentless are good feminist traits, but also, a woman can be strong without losing the things that she enjoys and that make her feminine (if she wants them to). emma shows how it’s possible for being strong as a woman can coexist with having “girly” traits, that the two things are not mutually exclusive. emma is the perfect example of the balance between being a strong female character but also not being reduced to just Strong Female Character™️
i’ve never been more emo in my entire life and that is a fact i am sure of
