I had a dream last night where Key and Peale were sharing their space exploration plans to a NASA committee, but whilst so doing, were also trying to one-up the other on rocket puns.

Oh wow I never thought that about BTY but it’s so true. As much as I love the song (and his friendship with Bebe was very sweet), looking back I don’t know if the release at that stage in album process was the best choice
I think in general, releasing a single before you know what you’re album is going to sound like is quite risky. Niall also did it, but it worked out OK, even though he ended up taking much longer and rewriting his album.
The reason I think it was such a serious misjudgemen in Louis’ case t is that there were really strong indications of possible difficulties. Louis was already finding himself in conflict over his sound (he talked about art vs science of songwriting in those very first BTY interviews) and had dealt with so much stress and trauma the previous year. The idea that everything was going to run smoothly seems incredibly optimistic.
Louis and his team were taking a music higher risk that Niall, releasing music so early in the recording process. Louis was rolling a 20 sided dice and needed 18 or more. While Niall was rolling two sixes needing 4 or more.
