🌿 The Meaning of Tawassul 🌿
In language: Tawassul means drawing close to what one seeks, being eager and striving to attain it.
Ibn al-Atheer said:
“The wasil is the seeker, one who is eager. Waseelah is what brings one closer, the means that helps reach and approach the goal.”
In Islam: Tawassul is drawing near to Allah through what pleases Him, by righteous deeds, worship, and living by His guidance.
“O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means (waseelah) of nearness to Him.” — [Surah al-Mā’idah 5:35]
Qatadah explained:
“Draw close to Him by obeying Him and striving to do what pleases Him.”
“Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, which of them would be nearest and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment.” — [Surah al-Isrā’ 17:57]
True tawassul isn’t about shortcuts, it’s about the sincerity of the path itself. Every act of goodness is a step toward the One we seek.
