When the rubble had finally begun to settle, the soldier’s keen eyes surveyed the wreckage for a headcount. A gleam of metal in the air, one flickering thruster–otherwise steady. A two-fingered salute from the roof of a squat building still intact, and a bow still in one piece.
He couldn’t miss Thor if he tried.
Avengers popping up across the desolation, one after the other, until… Wait. One notable figure missing, no signal nor sound-off nor flutter of wings above. Steve’s stomach sank like lead as the horrible, aching possibility washed over him.
Was his comm still in one piece? He was shouting anyway. Her name, her alias, has anyone seen Janet? Could he even hear a response over the pulsing panic in his ears?
Even the super soldier’s eyes almost missed her, a tiny glimmer of yellow peeking from a crack in the rubble, zipping out into the open. The form that erupted into full size staggered slightly, leaning heavily to one side, but by God she was alive. Steve couldn’t get his arms around her fast enough.
The others were looking. The world may have been looking. Captain America was supposed to be a leader, a symbol, infallible. He didn’t care.
He clasped Janet’s rubble-dusted face in both hands and kissed her like he’d never get another chance.
