#OUAT Kicks Ass. Now if i can SEE IT:
First, the good news. OUAT made a killer return last night, beating Amazing Race All-Stars in the Money Demo (18-49) with a 2.3 rating/7 vs AR's 1.8/5. Simpsons on FOX did a 1.2/4, but Family Guy followed up with 2.2/6. But the REAL fun happned in the next hour, when the debut of Resurrection on ABC: 3.6/9! Finally, ABC may have a solid Sunday night. Hell, even the preview show, Wicked Is Coming did well: 1.2/4 vs 60 Minutes on CBS with a 1.5/5 Now the bad news. Many of you may not be able to see Emma dating a monkey because ABC put a lock on the show being seen online. If you want to see New York City Serenade on your computer, you either have to have a participating cable company, or do HULU PLUS, not regular HULU! In other words, especially shippers, ABC is PREVENTING YOU FROM WATCHING YOUR FAVORITE SHOW ONLINE UNLESS YOU PAY A TOLL!!! ABC APP, WHY WON'T YOU LOAD???
Is anyone else trying to watch the Oscars live online? When I click to go to the ABC Live page, it loads but does not show a video. (And I know I fall into the requirements for watching live online cause I've done it with OUAT before.)
Changes To Watch ABC
When I wrote about the Watch ABC app coming to the Apple TV, I voiced my frustration at ABC for requiring users to have a paid cable TV membership in order to watch ABC content. After all, I had long been able to watch ABC shows a day after they aired on my iPad via the Watch ABC app and even AirPlay them to my Apple TV. Well, some things have unfortunately changed.
ABC has adopted a model similar to the one Fox rolled out a couple of years ago requiring you to wait a week before you can watch the latest episode of your favorite shows via the web or the Watch ABC app. Unfortunately on the Apple TV you're still required to have a cable TV subscription in order to watch any ABC show episodes. The one and only bit of good news here is that you can still AirPlay from the Watch ABC app for iOS to your Apple TV. At least for now. I'm also unclear whether by a week they mean a literal seven day period or eight days, as with Fox shows.
I supposed the thinking on ABC's part is that when you realize you can't watch these episodes online the next day that you'll either purchase the episode on iTunes or call your cable provider and sign up for a TV package. In my case, all they're doing is making it harder for me to watch their shows (and therefore their ads).
My wife and I were big fans of Fringe and watched every season up until season five. That season we got a few episodes in before we missed one and were subjected to Fox's eight day wait window. An eight day window meant that we could never catch up to the live broadcast. We eventually got fed up and waited until Netflix got the show.
Are Fox and ABC within their rights to lock down their content in this way? Absolutely. But it comes across as customer-hostile and certainly feels like skating to where the puck has been, not to where it's going.
So, ABC only allows subscribers of certain services to watch their shows online for free now. At least, that's my understanding. WHY?!!
